439 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND SLATER, Robert Harold “Bob” Bob was born in Alderley Edge, Pear Tree Farm, England on November 30, 1893. He came toWinnipeg, Canada to Homestead. WhenWorldWar I broke out he enlisted in the Army on February 21, 1916 in the 8th Battalion also known as “The Little Black Devils”. He was a Trench Soldier and served at Vimy. He was shot in the stomach at the Battle of Passchendaele and went to England to recover. There he met his wife. He came back to Canada to be discharged. He travelled back to England to bring his wife and son to Richmond Hill, Toronto. He had a total of seven children, four of whom served during WWII, two in the Army, one in the Air Force and one in the Navy. Bob passed away in Leamington, ON on January 1, 1990. SLOCUM, William Charles Charles was born on October 5, 1892 in the Township of Eastnor, Bruce County, Ontario. On March 21, 1916 while living in Spry, Eastnor Township, Bruce County, Ontario, Charles enlisted in the 160th Bruce Battalion, CEF and served in England and France during World War I as Private. On his discharge on June 15, 1919 he returned home. He was a member of The Royal Canadian Legion, Lion’s Head Branch 202. Charles passed away in the year of 1977 and is buried in the Eastnor Township Cemetery. SLOAN, Robert John “Bob” Robert was born on July 21, 1923 in Richmond Hill, Ontario. He enlisted in the Air Force on November 23, 1942. Physical description on enlistment: 5 feet, 10 inches in height; 161 lbs.; hazel eyes; light brown hair; and fair complexion. His occupational history states he was a machine operator at Serva Manufacturing for a year and then worked at Rogers Radio Tubes as a Tester before joining the RCAF. Flying Officer Robert John “Bob” Sloan was killed in a training accident on July 16, 1945 while serving with the 406 Squadron. He was the Navigator on a Mosquito bomber that was attempting to land while on a cross-country training flight. The crash occurred at Harrowbeer aerodrome near Yelverton, Devon. Bob is buried at Brookwood Cemetery, Woking, Surrey, England.
