437 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND SIMPSON, Robert Gemmell Robert was born in Glasgow, Scotland, UK on September 3, 1915. He enlisted in the Royal Air Force on January 19, 1939. He served in Scotland, Ireland and England during World War II as an Electrician until his discharge on October 17, 1945. On his release papers it was noted by his Commanding Officer that Robert proved to be a capable and efficient worker whose control of men was most noticeable and his conduct was above reproach. Robert was a member of The Royal Canadian Legion Branch 426 in Newmarket prior to his passing on December 29, 1985. SLATER, John W. “Jack” Jack was born on October 31, 1920 in Richmond Hill, Ontario. He enlisted for World War II in July 1941. He signed up in London, ON with his best friend Charlie Richardson. He served in the RCEME. During World War II, he served in England, France, Belgium, Holland and Germany. He was attached to the 1st Canadian Special Driving School, in order to train soldiers for the amphibious landings in Normandy; this operation was part of HMS Dragonfly. He was discharged in January 1946. He and Charlie got separated during the war; both made it back, and stayed the best of friends. He was a member of The Royal Canadian Legion Branch 188, Col. Jasperson in Kingsville, ON. Jack died in Windsor, ON on May 11, 2009. SINGLETON, William William was born in the District of Partick, Scotland on July 16, 1919. He came to Canada with the family in 1929. William enlisted in the Royal Canadian Medical Corp, Canadian Active Service Forces in Toronto on November 21, 1939 #8 Detachment. He transferred to the Royal Canadian Air Force Special Reserves. He served in the United Kingdom, Italy, and Sicily during World War II. William’s medals include 1939-1945 Star, Italy Star, Defence Medal, Canadian Volunteer Service Medal with Clasp, War Medal 1939-1945, plus the General Service Badge and RCAF Reserve Badge. He was discharged as a Corporal on October 17, 1945. William married Janetta on January 2, 1942 and had three children. He passed away February 9, 1987 at the age of 67.
