435 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND SHAW, Charles Alexander W. “Alex” Alex was born in Kleinburg, Ontario on April 30, 1923. He enlisted in the Army on June 1, 1943 and served with the Canadian Grenadier Guards in France, Belgium, Holland, and Germany during World War II. Alex was discharged on January 29, 1946. He was a Life Member of The Royal Canadian Legion MacKenzie Branch 414 for over fifty years and served as Past President for many years. Alex passed away on March 3, 1999. SIMPSON, James Lindsay Lindsay was born in Tobermory, Ontario on May 4, 1896. He enlisted in the Army on February 4, 1916 with the 160th Bruce Battalion. He was wounded and served in England during World War I. Lindsay passed away in 1942. SHYKOFF, Joseph David “Joey” Joseph was born on April 28, 1925 in Kracocin, Poland. Joey, the youngest of three children, convinced his parents to approve his enlistment in the RCAF at seventeen and a half years old, the earliest permitted age. After initial training in Windsor, ON he was posted to England. At nineteen years old he volunteered to replace the unwell navigator of Flight LP826 on a night navigation training mission. Near the completion of this exercise the aircraft suddenly went into an inverted dive and crashed near Harpole, Northampton. On September 24, 1944 the entire crew was killed.
