421 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND RUSSELL, William Roy William was born in Richmond Hill in 1920. He enlisted with the Air Force and as a Leading Aircraftsman William Roy Russell was killed in a “Friendly Fire” accident on March 23, 1944 while serving on a High Speed Launch in the English Channel. Roy’s actual unit was 969 (Balloon) Squadron but he had been seconded to 24th Air Sea Rescue unit based in Lowestoft, England. They were one of many launches spread across the English Channel to collect downed air crew. HSL #2706 was located fifty kilometers off the Dutch coast (approximately one hundred kilometers off the English coast) and was mistaken as an E-boat by 2 USAF P-47’s, was strafed and sunk with a loss of eleven of the fourteen crew members. Roy has no known grave and is commemorated on the Runnymede Memorial, Surrey, UK. His name is inscribed on the cenotaph in Richmond Hill, Ontario. RYAN, Robert Lloyd “Bob” Bob was born on December 21, 1937 in North Bay, Ontario. He enrolled in the Royal Canadian Air Force on June 25, 1955 at North Bay. He completed basic training at CFB St Jean, PQ and went on to trades training in Electronics at Centralia, ON. Eventually, Bob reclassified to Loadmaster serving with 435 Squadron Edmonton, 436 Squadron Downsview, ON; Dorval, PQ, Search and Rescue Winnipeg and 426 Squadron Trenton. Bob was deployed eleven months with Canadian Contingent United Nations Middle East serving with 115Air Transportation Unit in Cairo, Egypt responsible for arranging flights for the troops going on R&R. He completed many resupply flights to Thule Greenland, Iceland, Alert Bay, Frobisher Bay, Fort Churchill and Eureka NWT. Medals consist of Canadian Peacekeeping Service Medal and UN Emergency Force (Egypt/Sinai). Bob was discharged on August 15, 1962 at the rank of Corporal and went on to serve 37 years with law enforcement. RUSTULKA, Carl Carl was born in Bienfait, Saskatchewan on May 21, 1922. He enlisted on September 17, 1939 with the South Saskatchewan Regiment of the Canadian Army and served in Canada, the United Kingdom and Continental Europe. During his service, he was injured in action, however he returned to active duty. Carl was awarded the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal and Clasp, 1939-1945 Star, France and Germany Medal. Upon return to civilian life on November 29, 1945, Carl returned to Canada. His wife Bette joined him from England in 1946 and they raised a family of five children, one daughter and four sons, in Coalfields, SK until their move to Windsor, Ontario in July 1966. He worked at Chrysler Canada and retired in 1986. He was active in The Royal Canadian Legion at Branch 169 in Bienfait for approximately twenty years, then Branch 255 in Windsor for 45 years. Carl passed away on March 13, 2011.
