419 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND RUPPEL, Earl Herbert Earl was born on October 13, 1918 to Jacob and Edith Rahn of Waterloo, Ontario. Earl got his education at Central Public School as well as Kitchener and Waterloo Collegiate. He played the clarinet in the Waterloo Band, enjoyed rugby, track and coaching. He was a clerk in a clothing store before the war. Earl was with the Scots Fusiliers of Canada before enlisting on October 23, 1940 with the Royal Canadian Air Force. After basic training in London, Ontario, he proceeded overseas and quickly made the rank of Sergeant. Two months after being awarded his Pilot’s Flying Badge, Sgt. Pilot Ruppel and Sgt. Observer George Anderson of Galt were engaged in night flying operations. During this flight on November 18, 1941, they engaged in combat and their plane was shot down in Bury Hill, Sussex, England. Sgt. Ruppel is buried in Chichester Cemetery in Sussex, England. He is also gratefully remembered today as a “Son of Waterloo” and his picture hangs on the Memorial Wall in the City Hall in Waterloo, Ontario. RUSK, Robert Alexander Robert was born in Cramahe Township, Ontario on April 3, 1940. He enlisted in the Army on April 10, 1962. He did basic training with the PPCLI and served with the RC Sigs Kingston. He was discharged on September 16, 1965. He worked at Brookside training school in Cobourg for 32 years and retired in 1998. Robert is a 54-year member of The Royal Canadian Legion Cobourg Branch 133. RUSHTON, John “Jack” John was born in Southampton, Ontario on July 8, 1919. He enlisted in the Army in 1940 and served with the Royal Artillery, 8th Field in Italy, Europe and the Liberation of Holland during World War II. He was a member of The Royal Canadian Legion in Port Elgin, Ontario.
