413 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND ROUSE, John Thomas “John T.” John was born on October 11, 1891 in the town of Lion’s Head, Ontario. On July 2, 1916 while living in Hearst, Ontario John T. (as known by friends) enlisted with the OC Northern Fusiliers, 228th Battalion, training in Camp Borden and England. He saw active duty from 1916 to 1919 in France, Belgium and Germany during World War I. On his return to the Bruce Peninsula he married Annie Melisa Rosalie (Sadler) and from this union two daughters and two sons were born. John T. spent his life farming on the Bruce Peninsula until his death on January 31, 1975 at the Red Cross Hospital in Lion’s Head and is buried in the Stokes Bay Cemetery. He was a member of The Royal Canadian Legion Lion’s Head, Branch 202. ROUTH, Percy Gore Percy was born in Bangalore, India in 1841. His father, Capt. Henry Routh, died when Percy was three. Percy was a Midshipman with the Royal Navy prior to coming to Canada (Toronto) with his widowed mother and three siblings in 1861. He ‘followed the drum’ as he joined the US Federal Army in Detroit for a short while; but after the Trent crisis in 1861, he returned to Canada and joined the 13th Battalion of the Volunteer Militia of Hamilton. In 1866 he was a Lieutenant leading his unit to meet the Fenian invasion threat in Ridgeway, Ontario. The Toronto Leader newspaper reported that Percy Routh took a minor wound in the hip; but after the Canadian line broke, he tried to rally his troops three times saying “I will not run, I will die first!”. He then took a second bullet in the side entering his lung and was carried off the field. Due to his remarkable heroism under fire, the Hamilton Board of Trade commissioned a special ‘Sword of Honour for Gallantry’. The sword was presented to Percy Routh in a ceremony at the HamiltonArmoury on September 17, 1866. Percy Gore Routh died in 1898, a Niagara-on-the-Lake farmer. ROUSHAM, Robin Jeremy Robin was born in Staines, Middlesex, England on March 24, 1936. He immigrated to Canada in 1956 following National Service in the Fleet Air Arm of the Royal Navy. He served in the RCAF enlisting on September 12, 1956 as an Air Traffic Control Officer, serving at Bagotville, QC followed by 1 Wing RCAF at Marville, France, part of RCAF 1 Air Division. After Goose Bay, Labrador, he joined the ATC Standards Team in CFB Borden. A short posting in CFHQ, followed by CF Staff College, brought him back to NDHQ as a postings and career manager. He then served as Command Secretary at Mobile Command HQ, Saint-Hubert, QC before moving to CFB Ottawa to be Base Administration Officer. Following promotion to Colonel, he served as Director of Foreign Liaison NDHQ before being posted to CFB Saint-Jean, QC, the first ATC Officer to be appointed base commander. Finally, he served as Canadian Forces Attaché, Rome and Athens, retiring in 1992. He was discharged on March 23, 1992. After retirement, Robin worked for an Aviation Services Company in Ottawa in Health and Safety and Aviation Services.
