She joined the CWAC at 106 Manning Depot in Toronto on September 9, 1953 and served in the recruiting Personnel Selection area. As a permanent force call out she was assigned to the Ontario Regiment of Canada in Oshawa for the government S.M.T.P. (Special Militia Training Plan) initiated to help jobless/homeless recipients in their Personnel Records area. Upon closure of 106 MD in 1994, Verna transferred to the Supplemental Reserve Unit where she reported annually to the Department of National Defence until 1965. She was a Warrant Officer 2 upon discharge. She is a fifty-year member of The Royal Canadian Legion Coronation Branch 286 in Toronto. ROUSE, James Henry James was born in Lion’s Head, Ontario on September 6, 1897. He ensiled in the Canada Expeditionary Force on November 7, 1917. After being medically discharged on June 27, 1918, James returned to Tobermory. Over the years, he worked at Lumber Camps and also operated a Quarry at Mar. He was a member of The Royal Canadian Legion and of St. Edmunds Council for several years. James passed away on March 6, 1978. ROSS, William Ian “Bill” Bill was born in Sarnia, Ontario on September 29, 1911. He started his military career in 1928 serving with the Lambton Regiment Militia Unit in Sarnia. In 1938 he went on to serve with the 11th Field Squadron of the Royal Canadian Engineers and eventually serving in the Canadian Army (Active) in 1940 with The Corps of the Royal Canadian Engineers. Bill rose quickly through the ranks and became the Regimental Sergeant Major in Chilliwack. The Royal Canadian School of Military Engineers (RCSME) was known to train Engineers to build the “Bailey Bridges”. His other posting included Toronto, Petawawa, CFB Shilo and Winnipeg, MB. His medals included the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal, the War Medal 1939-1945 and the Canadian Forces Decoration with the picture of King George VI which is rare. Bill was medically discharged in 1961 at the rank of Warrant Officer 1st class and passed away on September 29, 1973.
