373 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND NUIJTEN, Frans Josef Frans was born in Helmond, Netherlands on January 8, 1920. He was a member of the Royal Netherlands Military from 1941 to 1946, trained in Stratford, Ontario with the Perth County Regiment and posted for duty with the Dutch Navy and Air Force, with the Royal Netherlands East Indies, No. 18 Squadron-Princess Irene Brigade. Frans served in Curaçao on Motor Torpedo Boats and Mine Sweepers as a Radio Mechanic-Operator and Telegrapher and in Indonesia in B25 Mitchell Bombers as a Radio Operator. While flying in B25’s, Sergeant Nuijten was awarded the Royal Netherlands Armed Forces – “Vligerkruis” (Flying Cross) as he: “did successfully carry out during the war in Japan, with courage and perseverance, as a member of the aircrew, in the period of 1943 to 1945, at least thirty-seven operations with a total of 222 flight hours under heavy enemy fire and hereby caused the enemy considerable losses in personnel and material in the area bordered by 122°-138° Eastern Longitude and 3°-13° South Latitude – 9 December 1949”(official citation). Upon returning to Canada, Frans married, raised his family and over the years worked in merchandizing, insurance sales, maintenance electricity and materials management. He also actively volunteered with Scouts Canada, the John Howard Society, the Cursillo movement and as a multi-language translator for foreign travelers at the London, ON Airport. Frans passed away on January 29, 1982. O’FLYNN, David D. David was born on January 15, 1934 in Luton, England. He embarked on sea going life at the age of fifteen; firstly, as a cadet RNR on HMS Conway; secondly, with Shell Tankers where he crossed the equator and then the International Date Line from West to East which lead him to lose a day out of that year. He traversed both Suez and Panama Canals. He enlisted in the Royal Navy on March 14, 1955. While serving for two years, he served on the Arctic Waters on Fishery Protection on HMS Coquette and Wave. The ships that operate north of the Arctic Circle have a distinctive blue flash and are called “Blue Nose”. David is a forty-year member of The Royal Canadian Legion Branch 13 in Scarborough. O’DONOUGHUE, Ron Ron was born in Montreal in 1941, where he attended elementary and high school. He was at Royal Military College from 1960 to 1964. Ron enlisted with the Royal Canadian Navy Fleet Air Arm in February 1960. He served as a Midshipman on HMCS Beaconhill, a World War II Frigate sailing out of Victoria, BC. He then sailed on the USS Luce, a Missile Frigate out of Norfolk, VA, while on exchange with the USN. He then began training as a Sub-Lieutenant with the RCAF on single engine aircraft in Centralia, ON and multi-engine aircraft in Portage la Prairie, MB. Ron joined the Fleet Air Arm at CFB Shearwater in Halifax, NS, where he flew Antisubmarine Warfare missions over the North Atlantic ensuring no unauthorized ships or submarines were in Canadian waters. He was discharged in 1967 as a Lieutenant. He received the following decorations: Cold War Service, RCN Service and Fleet Air Arm Service. After leaving the service in 1967, he lived in Montreal and Toronto, spending 35 years in the field of Information and Technology. He retired in Owen Sound in 2000.
