371 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND NORRIS, George Van Norman George was born on May 5, 1879 in Guelph, Ontario, the son of George Thomas Norris and Jane McBurney. He enlisted with the 213th Battalion at Camp Borden on July 22, 1916 his trade was electrician and he was 5 feet 7 ½ inches tall with dark brown eyes and medium brown hair and anAnglican. He was discharged as medically unfit due to a broken arch in his left foot. He was discharged on December 13, 1916. He died in April 1963 in Toronto and is buried in Woodlawn Memorial Cemetery, Guelph. He was survived by a son. NORWOOD, Robert Alphonces Robert was born in Westport, Ontario on October 28, 1922. He enlisted in the Army in May 1943 and was a dispatch rider. He drove Ammo and Cargo in Canada, the United Kingdom, Italy and Northwest Europe during World War II. He was discharged on July 17, 1946. He received the 1939-1945 Star, the Italy Star, the France and Germany Star and the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal and the War Medal 1939-1945. Robert married Edna Kerr in 1942. When he returned from the war he bought a farm on Croby Lake (near Westport) in 1947. They raised seven children and he farmed until he passed away at the age of 67 on February 2, 1990. Robert’s family continue to farm the land today. He was a Royal Canadian Legion member of Branch 542 in Westport for 38 years. NORRIS, John Thomas John was born on June 15, 1875 in Guelph, Ontario, the son of George Thomas Norris and Jane McBurney. He enlisted with the 99th Battalion on January 25, 1916 in Essex, Ontario. He departed on May 21, 1916 on the Olympic and arrived on June 8, 1916. He immediately transferred to the 35th Reserve Battalion but on September 27, 1916 was declared unfit for military service - he was overweight and had a problem with his right ankle and shoulder which prevented him from marching. Through the summer he was employed as a cook. He returned to Canada on the Mauritania arriving in Halifax in October 1916. He was formally discharged in Quebec on November 10, 1916. Determined to do his bit he served with Special Service Company from February to September 1918 when he was declared unfit in London, where all his service took place. He died on July 26, 1941 in Guelph, leaving a wife and four children, all of whom were enlisted in the Canadian Army.
