363 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND MURPHY, Robert Robert was born in New Richmond, Quebec on April 30, 1917 to Walter and Emily (Cormier) Murphy. He was one of nine children and was raised on a farm. He worked as a butcher and manager of a meat department for A&P Stores. In 1939, he married Antoinette Bernard. Robert enlisted in the Army on April 15, 1943 and did basic training in Lauzon, Quebec. He served in Canada during World War II. He was discharged on January 10, 1945 and moved to Montreal then to New Richmond in 1946. He was awarded the War Medal 1939-1945. He passed away on August 14, 1963 and is buried at the Field of Honour in Pointe-Claire, Quebec. MURRAY, Peter Alphonsus “Phonse” Phonse was born in Culross Township, Ontario on April 3, 1896. On St. Patrick’s Day 1916, he volunteered with the 160th Bruce Battalion at Teeswater. The 160th embarked in Halifax aboard the Metagama and arrived in Liverpool on October 28, 1916. For eighteen months the battalion trained in England. Phonse was transferred to the 2nd Battalion CMGC and shipped out to France. He suffered a shrapnel wound to his face on October 2, 1918 in Canal du Nord and rejoined his unit in Mons, Belgium as the armistice was signed, then spent five months with the occupation force in Germany. He sailed home aboard the Minnekahda, arriving in Halifax on May 23 and was discharged on May 25, 1919 in Toronto. Phonse returned to Bruce County and purchased a farm near Holyrood. On June 8, 1927, he married Gertrude Collison and raised eleven children. He was a founding member and 3rd President of The Royal Canadian Legion Branch 309 Lucknow, served on municipal council from 1943 to 1947 and 1951 to 1957 and was elected Reeve of Kinloss in 1961 andWarden of Bruce County in 1966. For 35 years, he was the mailman for route 2 until his death in 1977. All 51 grandchildren rode his mail route. MURPHY, Walter “Wally” Walter was born in New Richmond, Quebec on July 5, 1909 the son of Walter and Emily (Cormier). He was the brother of Raynold, Robert and Leo who also served during World War II. Before enlistment he was a farmer on his father’s farm and a lumberman in the winter months. He married Marie-Laure Arsenault on September 26, 1940. He enlisted in the Army on August 8, 1942 and he completed basic training in Lauzon, Quebec. He served with the Pictou Highlanders in Canada, and abroad in Newfoundland, and Bahamas B.W.I. He was discharged on May 30, 1944 in Quebec. He was awarded the War Medal 1939-1945. With his wife and family, he lived in New Carlisle, Quebec until later moving to Toronto, Ontario. Walter passed away on November 18, 1978.
