359 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND MUNDELL, David Livingston “Dave” David was born in Erin, Ontario in 1894, the son of Benjamin Mundell the wellknown owner of the Mundell Lumber Company. He enlisted on March 28, 1916 in Carleton Place, Ontario and by September he was on the battlefield in France. Dave served with the 130th and 12th Battalions before being transferred to the 124th Canadian Pioneer Battalion of the 4th Division as a Sergeant. The Sappers and Engineers were an important group in preparation for battle, building roads, bridges, trenches and tunnels. Dave was discharged in June 1919 and, after a short time at his old job with the Union Bank, he took over his father’s business, the Mundell Lumber Co. In 1936 Dave joined the Vimy Pilgrimage and with 6,200 other Canadians attended the unveiling of the Vimy Memorial by King Edward VIII. Dave was instrumental in the founding of the Erin Legion Branch 442 in 1947 and was a charter member. He also was a charter member of the Lions Club and Reeve of Erin Village. David Livingston Mundell passed away on June 12, 1961 and is buried in the Erin Union Cemetery. MUNROE, Douglas Francis “Doug” Doug was born in Halifax, NS on December 6, 1942. After graduation in 1960 he joined the Royal Canadian Navy on June 27, 1960. Following training in HMCS Cornwallis; he served on HMCS Bonaventure, Stadacona, Resolute and Annapolis as a Radar Plotter. He sailed to many ports in the eastern United States, Bermuda, Puerto Rico, the Netherlands, Ireland, Portsmouth and to Cuba during the Missile Crisis. He was discharged on October 27, 1965. He began a 22 year long career with Atomic Energy of Canada Ltd. leaving as Supervisor of Computer Services in 1988. He then became an Information Technology Manager with Indian Affairs and Northern Development Canada and spent two years in the Northwest Territories followed by thirteen years with Indian Affairs in the National Capital Region, he retired in May 2003 with 42 years of Government Service. In 1964 Doug married Shirley (Lovett) and they have four children, seven grandchildren and two great grandchildren. He is a 45 year Legion Life Member, a Past President of Westboro Branch 480 and has served several times as Zone G5 Ontario, Zone Commander. MUNN, Thomas Hiram Hiram was born in Tobermory, Ontario on May 23, 1900. He enlisted in the Army with the 248th Battalion on December 16, 1916. After arriving in England, when it was learned that he was under age, he was put on guard duty at the Palace until he turned eighteen. On June 17, 1940 Hiram re-enlisted and joined the Grey and Simcoe Foresters, later to the Canadian Armoured Corp. He was discharged on June 28, 1945 and received the Defence Medal and the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal. After his discharge he returned to Tobermory where he farmed and operated a Sawmill. Hiram passed away in 1979 and was a member of The Royal Canadian Legion Tobermory Branch 290.
