351 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND MITCHELL, Ernest Vernon “Vern” Vern was born in Richmond Hill, Ontario on December 1, 1922 and attended school there, the family moving to Toronto just prior to his enlistment on June 13, 1940. His physical description was: 5 feet, 6 inches in height; 150 lbs.; blue; light brown hair; and dark complexion. At enlistment he was working as a Labourer in an Iron Foundry and stated his preference after discharge to become a butcher. He was initially attached to the Queen’s Own Rifles of Canada, transferring to 1st Special Services after receiving his paratrooper wing and just prior to the Anzio invasion. Private Ernest Vernon Mitchell died of wounds on May 29, 1944 while serving with the 1st Canadian Special Service Battalion (Devil’s Brigade). He was fatally wounded near Artena, Italy in an action in which he was awarded the Silver Star. He is buried in the Beach Head War Cemetery (Anzio), Italy. MOLNAR, William Julius William was born on February 21, 1937 in Tilley, AB. He enlisted in the Army on September 15, 1955. He served in Canada, Cyprus and Germany. William was a member of the reserve in the 93rd Field Battery for two years before joining the regular force in 1955 with the Black Watch Regiment. In 1970 he became a member of the Royal Canadian Regiment when the Black Watch was removed from the regular force. LCol Molnar was awarded the Canadian Forces Decoration with three bars, the UN Cyprus, Peacekeeping and the Canadian Forces Queens Marksman Medal for Shooting. He was discharged on October 15, 1977. He is a member of the Legion Branch 638 Kanata and has been for fifteen years. MITTEN, Percy Charles Percy was born in Watford, Ontario on October 22, 1923. He enlisted in the Army in 1943 and served in England, France and Holland. Percy was reported missing but subsequent information revealed he was captured by the enemy in Normandy on July 21. Percy returned home in 1945, married Dora Debus and raised four children. He was employed at Camp Ipperwash as maintenance man, also part-time carpenter. Percy passed away on October 5, 1996.
