347 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND MERFIELD, Sidney H. Sidney was born in Wandsworth, London, England on June 25, 1896. He enlisted in the Army in 1914 and served until 1919 during World War I as Acting Captain and Gunner. He received a certificate for service and was Mentioned in Dispatches. After the war, he married and worked in the Bank of England. Sidney passed away on October 25, 1940. METCALFE, Leslie Martin “Les” Les was born June 7, 1922 in Milton, Ontario. He enlisted in the Army in 1942 but was rejected due to a heart problem. He joined the QueenYork Rangers Res. in 1942 and later in 1943 he joined the RCAF as a ground crew, then transferred to aircrew. He graduated Sergeant Flight Engineer Lancaster bomber in late 1944. He was discharged in 1945 and returned to his bride of 1944, Elinor Gallagher, and his position prior to the war, with Canada Illinois Tools in Toronto. He was a member of The Royal Canadian Legion Coronation Branch 286 in Toronto for 31 years. Leslie passed away on April 13, 2019. MERRITT, Charles Raymond Charles was born in Kincardine Township on December 16, 1920. He wanted to join the service and do his part to help. He went to Galt to check out air force and then to London to check out the army. He decided to join the Air Force and did so in 1941. He was trained in Brantford in 1942 to service aircraft engines. He once flew the rail line from Kitchener to Goderich to Kincardine. In fall 1944, Charles was sent to Moncton, NB and then by boat to England. He worked inYorkshire servicing planes and went on flights to check things out. Servicing was done during the day and planes flew at night. Three planes at a time were lined up for service. He came back to Canada by ship but this time in the hold and was seasick. After arriving in Kincardine, he had to go to Toronto where he was discharged on February 7, 1946. Charles returned to Kincardine, and worked as a labourer for Coombs Furniture Factory. Eventually he became Clerk of the Town of Kincardine until his retirement in 1985. He was a member of The Royal Canadian Legion Kincardine Branch 183. Charles passed away on November 26, 2007.
