The family moved to Montreal and he joined the Royal Canadian Navy on December 15, 1942. He served onboard ships Lunenburg, Niobe, Nootka and Restigouche during World War II. As an antiaircraft gunner, his tour of duty included the Murmansk run, Bay of Biscay, North Atlantic and the D-Day landing in Normandy. While on watch aboard a ship the ice would freeze on his coat and someone would need to break it off before he could move.
