He enlisted in the Merchant Navy on June 1, 1918. Goldwin Starr McMahon was killed in action on August 5, 1918 while serving as 2nd Steward on SS Luz Blanca when it was attacked in the Atlantic Ocean just SE of Halifax, by a German U-Boat. The U-Boat shelled the ship number of times and one of the shells hit amid-ships killing the 2nd Cook and fatally injuring Starr. Merchant Marine causalities were not generally seen as deserving of the same recognition as other serving military personnel during World War I, hence Starr was not included on the Richmond Hill cenotaph WWI inscriptions. At the end of the 2nd War this thought had changed and Starr was appropriately added to the monument. Starr was buried at sea and is commemorated on the Halifax Memorial.
