325 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND McCULLEY, Robert “Bob” Bob, the son of Joseph and Mary McCulley, was born on April 11, 1922 in Hamilton, Ontario. He volunteered to serve during World War II with the Argyle and Southern Highlanders in 1941. He was posted in Hamilton, Ontario and Nanaimo, BC then transferred to Jamaica. In Jamaica, he met and married his wife, Dorothy Marjorie McCulley. Soon afterwards, he was sent overseas to England where he was transferred to the Royal Canadian Artillery, the 8th Light Anti-Aircraft Regiment. The unit was sent to France. Robert was killed in action during the Liberation of Calais, France on September 8, 1944. He never got to see his beautiful daughter, Barbara Jean. Robert lies in the Calais Canadian War Cemetery in Leubringhen, Pas-deCalais, France, grave marker 4F8. McDONALD, William Francis William was born in Monkton, Perth County, Ontario in November 1897, the son of John Francis McDonald and Lucinda Grace Matthews. He enlisted with 110th Battalion in Stratford on December 27, 1915. He served in the 58th Battalion in France (the 110th would have been broken up for re-enforcements). William departed for overseas on Caronia, leaving Halifax on October 31, 1916 and arriving in England on November 11. He transferred to the 58th Battalion on February 7, 1917. William suffered gunshot wounds on the left leg on August 7, 1918 and the left arm and hand on October 1, 1918. He suffered all the rest of his life from his experiences in the war. He returned to Canada on Empress of Britain, arriving on February 25, 1919. He was discharged in London, Ontario on March 19, 1919. He was awarded the British War Medal and Victory Medal. At the time of enlistment, William described his occupation was tinsmith. Attestation papers describe him as five feet, six inches tall with a light complexion, grey eyes and light hair. He was a Presbyterian. William passed away on March 31, 1978 in Almont, Michigan, leaving his wife but no children. McDONALD, Maxwell John Maxwell was born on July 1, 1907 in West Monkton, Perth County, Ontario. He was the youngest son of John Francis McDonald and Lucinda Grace Matthews. Maxwell enlisted in the RCAF on July 10, 1940 in London, Ontario. He had several promotions, October 10, 1940 – AC1, January 10, 1941 - LAC and February 1, 1943 - Sergeant. He was discharged on September 27, 1945 in London, Ontario. His occupation was Tailor. He was stationed at Rockcliffe, Camp Borden and Trenton air bases. He was President of The Royal Canadian Legion Branch 153, Tillsonburg from 1952 to 1954. During his term the Ladies Auxiliary was formed and he was known to the Ladies as “the Father of the Auxiliary”. He was 2nd Vice-President in 1960 and Secretary in 1961 at the Col. John McCrae Legion in Guelph. He was Zone C-2 Commander from 1969 to 1971 and Zone C-2 Poppy Chairman from 1971 to 1983. Maxwell passed away on June 23, 1984 and left a wife and daughter. For his service he was awarded the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal.
