319 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND McAREE, Patrick Patrick was born on March 17, 1894 in Edinburg, Scotland. He enlisted in the Army on August 13, 1915. He transferred from Nova Scotia Highlanders to No.2 Tunneling Coy. He served in France (Vimy Ridge) during World War I. He was exposed to a mustard gas attack and spent six months in a hospital in England. Patrick passed away on May 9, 1970. McCONNELL, Harold Falconer Harold was born in Hillsburgh, Ontario on February 6, 1895. On December 18, 1915, Harold enlisted in the newly formed 147th Grey Battalion at Owen Sound, Ontario. He trained at Camps Niagara and Borden in Ontario and embarked from Halifax on the RMS Olympic on November 13, 1916. Arriving at the Shoreham Camp in England, the battalion was broken up and the men were placed in the 8th Reserve Battalion. Arriving in France, Harold was transferred to the 4th Canadian Mounted Rifles at Vimy Ridge on February 17, 1917. The 4th CMR had been in the front line at Vimy since the previous October. Harold had just arrived in the field when the Battalion was withdrawn to a safe area to practice for the assault on the ridge. By the evening of April 8, the men were huddled in dug-outs and tunnels. At 5:30 am the guns opened up and a few minutes later the troops sprang from the trenches advancing behind the creeping barrage. Harold McConnell was killed in action on April 9, 1917 and was buried in the Thelus Military Cemetery at Vimy. At Hillsburgh, in November 1919, at the St. Andrew’s Church, a Memorial Service was held with a Tablet unveiled to Honour Harold McConnell. McCARROLL, John Joseph “Joe” Joe was born in Alliston, Ontario on November 30, 1918. He enlisted in the Army in 1942 with the 6th Canadian Infantry Brigade. He served as a cook during World War II, as he was a butcher by trade. He was wounded by a friendly fire mishap when one of his comrades shot him in the wrist. After Joe’s discharge in 1945, he continued in his trade as a butcher, retiring in 1984. He was the first President of the Alliston Legion Branch 171, to be awarded the MSM and Palm Leaf. He retired at a butcher shop in 1984. Joe passed away on January 30, 2017.
