315 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND MARTIN, William Jamieson “Jamie” Jamie was born in Toronto on July 22, 1917 and was the second of three sons to John Alexander and Jessie Martin. The Martin family moved to Waterloo after his birth. Jamie graduated from the University of Toronto in 1939 and on July 25, 1941, he enlisted in the Army. He was appointed to the Canadian Armoured Corps and began training in Brockville as a cadet. During the war, he was part of the Elgin and then 1st Hussars Regiments and was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant. He was engaged to Muriel Clift who worked as a military nurse in Europe during the war. On June 11, 1944, his HQ3 Armoured Tank Brigade was involved in a battle as Le MesnilPatry, Northwest of Caen, France and Lieutenant Martin was killed in action. He is buried in the cemetery at Bény-sur-Mer in France and there is a memorial stone for him in the Grove Cemetery in Dundas, Ontario. Lieutenant Jamie Martin is gratefully remembered today as a “Son of Waterloo” and his picture hangs on the Memorial Wall in the City Hall in Waterloo, Ontario. MASON, John T. “Jack” John was born in Orangeville, Ontario on May 4, 1924. He attended High School when war broke out and enlisted in the RCAF in Toronto at eighteen. Jack received training in Toronto and Belleville for Bombing and Gunnery where he held the record for most accurate bombing run, 37 yards at the time. Jack received his Navigation training at Crumlin and was posted overseas in December 1943 with 6 Group Bomber Command with 419 (Moose) Squadron at Middleton St. George, England. His first operation was on September 14, 1944 and his last operation was on March 11, 1945. Jack was a Bomb Aimer in Lancaster KB732 the Exterminator. He was awarded Operational Wings on completion of 33 missions against the enemy. Considered to be an excellent crew, on one occasion an Air Commander flew an operation with them. Jack worked at AVRO after the war and was a member of The Royal Canadian Legion Branch 220, Shelburne until his death on October 22, 2017. MARTINDALE, William F. William was born inYork, Ontario on October 20, 1925. He joined the Army as soon as he could. He tried to join when he was underage and the Recruiting Officer called his mother who would not let him enlist early. He obtained his 1st Class and Rifle Expert Badges when he did enlist. He left the Army being discharged on April 24, 1946 and he worked as 2nd Class Engineers and raised a family of six children. He joined The Royal Canadian Legion in Brantford, he moved around a lot so he was a member of many different Branches. William passed away on October 23, 2004.
