313 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND MARSH, Frank Thomas Frank was born in Toronto, Ontario on July 24, 1922. He joined the Canadian Army in 1939 to fight the Nazis. Frank was in the 4th Canadian Armoured Troops Workshop Royal Canadian Electrical and Mechanical Engineers unit, which was formed for World War II. His unit landed after D-Day in France and fought through France, Belgium and Germany to the wars end. Frank left the Army and went on to a successful career in banking starting at the Imperial Bank of Canada. Frank was awarded the 1939-1945 Star, France and Germany Star, Defence Medal, Canadian Volunteer Service Medal with Bar and the War Medal 1939-1945. Frank passed away on September 16, 2000. MARTIN, Albert Joseph Albert was born in Prospect Hill, Blanchard Township, Perth County Ontario on October 25, 1923 to William and Florence Martin later of Granton, Ontario. Albert enlisted on November 5, 1942 in London, Ontario. He arrived in England on April 4, 1943 joining the 8th Canadian Infantry Reinforcement Unit, initially to be sent to the Essex Scottish Regiment but transferred to the Perth Regiment on June 18, 1943. He sailed with the Perth Regiment in October 1943 to Italy, fighting with the Perths through the battles at Riccio River and Liri Valley. Albert suffered shrapnel wounds to the ankle on May 27, 1944 and returned to the Perths on August 24. On August 31, 1944 the Perths attacked across the Foglia Valley capturing Point 204, the high ground that dominated part of the German Gothic Line. The Germans counterattacked during the early hours of September 1, 1944. The fighting was savage, confusing, soon reduced to hand-to-hand combat. By 6:00 am the Battalion had stabilized the line and driven the Germans back. Causalities were heavy including Private Martin killed sometime during the night. He is buried in Montecchio War Cemetery in Italy and commemorated on the cenotaph in Rannoch and the plaque at the St. Mary’s Town Hall. MARSH, James Maurice James was born in Toronto, Ontario on May 30, 1926. He enlisted in the Army in December 1944. He served during World War II until his discharge in September 1946. He was a member of The Royal Canadian Legion Branch 77 Lakefield for 29 years. James passed away on February 11, 2015.
