309 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND MANDERSON, Shirley Ann Shirley was born in Vancouver, BC on January 25, 1947. Following graduation from Goderich High School, she enlisted in the RCAF and trained in the Maritimes with the Financial Division, serving in RCAF Clinton, London and Gagetown, NB. She married W/O Jack Kopstein (Military Band Conductor) in London, Ontario. After leaving the Air Force in 1972, married military life with husband Jack took her to Victoria, BC, then Ottawa, ON in 1974 where she was employed with the Federal Public Service Finances until 1980. Further postings led to Calgary, Alberta from 1984 to 1986; Kingston, ON from 1986 to 1995; and Chilliwack, BC from 1995 to 2005. Her travels includedAlaska, Florida, Mexico, California, Germany and Britain. Her hobbies included making afghans, attending numerous concerts and was particularly fond of military band music. In the last few years, Shirley involved herself with the Kinsman Club. She made frequent visits to “Family Place” as ‘well as other favourite spots to share her homemade cookies and was known as the “Cookie Lady”. Whenever there was a live concert or a musical in town, she was always front seat and center. Shirley passed away on February 3, 2005 in Chilliwack and is buried at St. Mary’s Cemetery, Chilliwack. MARCHANT, Thomas Valentine Thomas was born in Hackney, England on May 17, 1871. He enlisted at London, England in the 1st British Army (Reserves) on January 23, 1894 and ended up serving with the British 4th Northumberland Fusiliers in South Africa. He was awarded the South African Medal 1899-1902 with Clasp. He eventually immigrated to Canada under a Certificate of Identity of an Army Reserve Man Permitted to Reside in the Dominion and was first discharged on January 22, 1906 at Halifax, NS. Thomas enlisted again on December 17, 1915 at London, Ontario to serve with the Canadian Expeditionary Forces as part of the 135th Battalion serving in England during World War I. Thomas was discharged on July 31, 1917 at the rank of Private. MANDERSON, Thomas Arthur Thomas was born in Toronto, Ontario on September 27, 1945. He followed the footsteps of his grandfather, George Arthur Manderson, CEF WWI 123rd and 9th Infantry Battalion 1915 to 1919 and WWII and also his father Frank Thomas Manderson, RCAF 1939 to 1945. Thomas enlisted in the RCAF in July 1965. Upon completing military training in St. Jean, Quebec, aptitude tests led him to RCAF Station Clinton training on heavy ground radar. After graduation, he selected and served at 42 Radar Squadron, Cold Lake, Alberta. He took advanced training in Streator, Illinois, USA which led him to the DEW Line on the Arctic Circle/Baffin Island, NT for another three years maintaining Radar and Communications Equipment andWeather reporting for the MOE. The majority of the time was tracking commercial aircraft from Europe to North America along with B-52 military exercises. He then hired on with Transport Canada, maintaining the Airport Radars at Pearson/Caledon/Hamilton and Toronto Island for another 22 years, retiring with the Golden Handshake on September 27, 1995. Thomas is a 47-year member of The Royal Canadian Legion Goderich Branch 109.
