299 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND MacDONALD, Malcolm Moncrieff “Crieff” Malcolm, better known as Crieff, was born on January 14, 1921 the only son of Dr. Marshall and Pearl (Ballard) MacDonald of Thedford, Ontario. He joined the RCAF in 1940 and trained in Goderich, Ontario, Commonwealth Flying School. He left for Europe in 1941 and was stationed in Scotland. His call of duty took him on flights from North Africa to Italy performing fighter cover and surveillance reconnaissance. He was Warrant Officer in an ammo dump in Italy. His tour of duty ended in 1945 and he arrived in New York on the Queen Mary troop ship. A train ride from New York took him to Montreal to Gananoque Air Force Base where he waited for his discharge. In 1946 he returned to his bride Grace (Lawson) and young son and followed some of his comrades at arms to medical school, UWO in London. After graduation he became Thedford’s beloved town physician, trailing the footsteps of his father. He was a 55-year member of The Royal Canadian Legion Branch 278, Thedford. Crieff passed away on May 28, 2000. MacDONELL, Hugh John Hugh was born to Dr. Hugh C. MacDonell and Muriel Edith (Dodds) on December 5, 1918 in Goderich, Ontario. He had one sister named Edith. Hugh received his education at Suddaby School in Kitchener, as well as Kitchener and Waterloo Collegiate. Growing up, he played in Junior League Hockey as well as Rugby. Before the war, Hugh worked at Kaufman Rubber Company Limited as an export sales clerk. He was married to Helen Elizabeth (Laing) in May 1940 and they had one son, John Hugh. On May 26, 1941, Hugh enlisted with the Air Force and was stationed at the RCAF #10 Service Flying Training School in Dauphin, Manitoba as an Instructor. Pilot Officer MacDonell was killed as the result of a flying accident on August 24, 1942 and is buried in Mount Hope Cemetery in Waterloo. He is gratefully remembered today as a “Son of Waterloo” and his picture hangs on the Memorial Wall in the City Hall in Waterloo, Ontario. MacDONALD, Neil Lester Neil was born on October 17, 1925 at Mt. Stewart, Queens County, Prince Edward Island. He joined the Royal Canadian Navy at eighteen years old and served in the Battle of the Atlantic aboard HMCS Kootenay from 1943 to 1946. He was honourably discharged in 1946 and returned to PEI. He married and had three sons. He worked at PE Hydro. In 1956, Neil joined the Royal Canadian Air Force Military Police in Summerside, PEI. He was sent to Marveille, France. In 1963 he was transferred to St. John’s, Quebec, then to Downsview, Ontario and then to Ottawa, ON receiving his honourable discharge in 1977. Neil was awarded the Atlantic Star Medal, Canadian Volunteer Service Medal and Clasp, War Medal 1939-1945 and the Canadian Forces Decoration and Clasp. He worked for National Capital Commission (Public Service) and retired in 1983. He is currently living in Stillwater Creek Residence in Nepean, Ontario. He is a member of The Royal Canadian Legion Branch 593 in Nepean.
