287 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND LEY, James Earnest James was born in Orillia, Ontario on January 24, 1917. The family moved to Richmond Hill when James was five. He enlisted in the Navy on April 22, 1939. Physical description on enlistment: 5 feet, 11½ inches tall; 170 lbs.; blue eyes; brown hair; fair complexion. His Occupational history listed his trade as Lab Assistant with Connaught Labs in Toronto. Leading Seaman James Earnest Ley was killed on October 5, 1942 while serving on HMCS Amherst. His death was reported as an accident: “he was lost overboard and drowned”. His body was recovered at Neville, Ireland on October 21, 1942. He served on eight different ships during his almost three years of service. LLOYD, Gary Michael Gary was born in Soellingen, Germany on December 20, 1962. He joined the Canadian Forces from his adopted home town of Trenton, Ontario. Following Basic Training he was trained as an Aircraft Electrician, later becoming a Flight Engineer where he saw service in the Tactical Helicopter, Search and Rescue and Transport roles. He served with 427,424,426 Squadrons and the HMCS Fredericton. He had a posting with NATO –Stanavforlant, SFOR Bosnia. He was discharged in October 2007. He resides in Frankford, Ontario and is very active with The Royal Canadian Legion Branch 387 as a fifteen-year member. LIPS, Charles Gordon Charles was born on July 18, 1897 to Katherine and John Lips in Wellesley, Ontario. He lived in Alberta and worked as a bank clerk prior to enlistment in World War I. He enlisted with the Canadian Expeditionary Force Alberta Regiment - 1st Depot Battalion on June 20, 1918 in Calgary, Alberta and was shipped overseas to Manchester, England, arriving in August 1918. Private Lips served for a short time in England until his return voyage to Halifax at the end of September 1919. He was discharged on demobilization on October 15, 1919. Charles Lips married Edna Ella (Heiser) on June 19, 1924. He passed away in 1965 and is buried in Woodland Cemetery in Kitchener, Ontario.
