283 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND LEE, Avard William Avard was born in Glenwood,Yarmouth County, Nova Scotia on December 15, 1925. He enlisted in the Army in 1943 with the North Nova Scotia Highlanders. He served in England, Holland and Germany during World War II until his discharge in 1946. Avard remained after the war in occupation service. He spent his eighteenth birthday on the front lines in Holland. He said when they were going into shore on the boats, he would jump into the water and hold onto the side of the boat so that he was just out of the water enough so you could see his helmet. He rode motorcycle as dispatch. He remembered driving 100 mph on the autobahn highway in Germany. He was a 39-year member of The Royal Canadian Legion Branch 426 in Newmarket. Avard passed away on October 14, 2017. LEE, George Charles George was born on June 20, 1924 in Manitoba. He volunteered for war service enlisting at HMCS Star in Hamilton, Ontario at the age of seventeen. Following training to become a radar operator, he was deployed to an escort Corvette HMCS K191 Mayflower. George was part of handful of officers and enlisted men who remained with the “Daisy Mae” as she was affectionately known, for the duration of the war. During his war service, George was injured by an exploding ordnance which landed him in the infirmary for a few weeks. Later in life he was reminded of this ordeal as shrapnel made its way to the surface of his arms from time to time. Following World War II, George returned to civilian life in Southwestern Ontario. He was married to Madeleine Mellor for 57 years and had two daughters. George was a proud member of the A.F. & A.M. and past Master of his Freemasonry lodge. He worked in the leather and tanning industry, establishing himself as a global expert in the field. He was respected by many colleagues around the world as an honest businessman with integrity. George died at home in Acton, Ontario at the age of 78 surrounded by his family. He was a member of The Royal Canadian Legion Acton Branch 197. LEE, Garth Edward Garth was born in Ottawa, Ontario on May 17, 1962. He enlisted in the Army on May 4, 1979 with GGFG, 1 PPCLI, 1RCR, Logistics. He served in Canada, Kosovo, Cyprus and Gulf War until his discharge on September 3, 2007. Garth has been awarded the Canadian Forces Decoration and Bar, and the following medals Queen’s Jubilee, Gulf War, Peace Keeper, NATO, Kosovo and Cyprus. He has been a Royal Canadian Legion member of the Kanata Branch 638 for nine years.
