269 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND KENNEDY, Douglas Philips Douglas was born in Toronto to John Hogarth and Francis Mae Kennedy on July 13, 1918. Before the war, he trained with the Scots Fusiliers. He was married to Patricia and the couple lived in Waterloo, Ontario. On June 6, 1940, Douglas enlisted with the Army and trained with the Highland Light Infantry of Canada. He went overseas the following year. Major Kennedy’s younger brother, Captain Peter Kennedy, was also with the Highland Light Infantry of Canada and was sent to officer’s training school in Brockville on enlisting for active service and was eventually sent overseas as a reinforcement officer. Sadly, their father learned of the death of both of his sons at the same time, even though it is believed they met their deaths two or three days apart. Major Kennedy died while in active service on September 19, 1944 and is buried in Calais Canadian War Cemetery (Leubringhen) Pas de Calais, France. He is gratefully remembered today as a “Son of Waterloo” and his picture hangs on the Memorial Wall in the City Hall in Waterloo, Ontario. KING, John William “Jack” John was born in Lethbridge, Alberta on August 30, 1917. He enlisted in the Army on January 6, 1942. He served in Canada and England during World War II being discharged on March 21, 1946 as Sergeant. Jack married Gladys (Ralph) two months after enlisting and their son John was born in 1943 just before he left for England. He was a fifteen-year member of The Royal Canadian Legion in Toronto. He passed away on January 31, 1987. KERSWILL, Giles James Daniel James was born in Vaughan, Ontario (RR#2 Maple) on January 6, 1921 and was living with his family in Oak Ridges when he enlisted on February 26, 1941. His physical description on enlistment: 5 feet, 7 ¾ inches tall; 145 lbs.; brown eyes; dark brown hair and dark complexion. He listed his trade as scholar as he recently graduated from Richmond Hill High School. He also noted he worked as a farmer for his father. In June 1942 in Bristol, England, James rescued a girl from drowning, the item being covered in the Richmond Hill Liberal on July 23, 1942. Warrant Officer 2nd Class Giles James Daniel Kerswill was serving as a Wireless Air Gunner with RCAF 353 Squadron when he went missing in action on December 15, 1942 on air operations over India. He is commemorated on the Singapore Memorial and St. John’s Anglican Church in Jefferson (Richmond Hill), Ontario.
