After four years in the Army Cadets (RCR) he enlisted in the Regular Force in August 1967 and spent four years at the Royal Military College in Kingston earning his commission and an honours degree in International Studies. The summers between terms were occupied in learning the basics of his chosen trade - Gunner. After graduation he was posted to CFBValcartier in 5RALC (Light Artillery Regiment) 5th Canadian Brigade. This was the height of the Cold War so field exercises and training were constant in order to be ready if the war should ever heat up. He was promoted to Captain, earned his Para wings and became qualified as an Instructor in Gunnery. In the fall of 1976 after spending the summer at the Combat Arms School in Gagetown, NB he was honourably discharged. Wayne began a 32-year career with the Royal Bank becoming a specialist in the financing of large commercial projects. His final years were spent in the Caribbean training field lending officers. Following retirement from RCB, he served as a consultant to several Caribbean Real Estate developers. Wayne is a ten-year member of The Royal Canadian Legion and a member of Branch 486 in Oakville. He has served as the Veterans Service Officer for five years. KENDALL, Roy Frederick Roy was born inWoodstock, Ontario on December 30, 1916. He enlisted in the Army (RCR) in 1940 and was shipped out to England in 1941 leaving a young son and wife. He was quickly reassigned to the Provost Corps and was deployed to Sicily. The Provost Corps’ main job was to guide the troops, carefully working out proper routes for getting supplies forward and getting the wounded and prisoners to the rear. While proceeding north into Italy he had an accident on his motorcycle. He was treated in a British field hospital and quickly returned to active duty and advanced through Italy and into France and on to Belgium and Holland. He returned to Holland sixty years after their liberation to enthusiastic crowds of grateful Netherlanders. Following his discharge, he returned to Woodstock and founded Kendall Cab Company. The company is now under new ownership but still retains the name Kendall Cab. He also founded Kendall Cartage delivering goods from stores to clients’ homes. His two sons joined the RCMP and were posted west so he and his wife Hazel moved to Calgary. He was a lifelong volunteer with the Calgary Police. Roy passed away at the age of 93 in 2010. KENDALL, Frederick William “Fred” Fred was born on March 7, 1927 in Woodstock, Ontario. He enlisted in the RCAF in November 1943 at the age of sixteen. He intended to train as an Air Gunner hoping to fly on Lancaster Bombers. However, recruiters discovered that he was proficient in Morse Code from his cadet days and so he trained as a Wireless Air Gunner (WAG). He trained on the Yale and the Harvard aircraft. However, his training took him until the end of the war in Europe; therefore, he was never posted overseas. His volunteer efforts to transfer to the Pacific Theatre were also thwarted when the Japanese surrendered. Following his discharge in 1946, Fred worked for the Woodstock Fire Department, a family restaurant business and joined the Imperial Bank of Canada. He retired from the bank and then sold RIFs for several years. He has always been an avid sailor and sailed his 33 ft C&C yacht for several years until he could no longer manage it alone. In 1996 he joined a flotilla of seventy sailboats and sailed from Toronto to Newfoundland on the 500th anniversary of the landing of Jean Cabot on the island. Fred now lives in Oakville and is a member of The Royal Canadian Legion Branch General Chris Vokes 486.
