265 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND JUDGE, Bruce W. Bruce was born on September 19, 1937 in Belleville, Ontario. He enlisted on September 1, 1961 with the Fort Garry Horse, 8th Hussars. He served in Canada, Germany, England and Cyprus until his discharge on September 12, 1982. Bruce was awarded the Canadian Forces Decoration and Bar and the United Nations Cyprus and NATO Medals. For ten years Bruce has been a Royal Canadian Legion member of the Kanata Branch 638. KENDALL, Ernest John “Ernie” Ernest was born in Woodstock, Ontario on May 22, 1921. He served in the Royal Canadian Navy fromApril 1942 to September 1945. He was posted to join the crew of the Prince Rupert which was berthed at the time in Victoria. He sailed with this frigate and a crew of 180 south and through the Panama Canal to the Port of Halifax. He spent the war years escorting merchant mariners across the North Atlantic to the UK, in all he made sixteen safe crossings. Ernie was busy most of the time with his ear to the astic machine listening for the sounds of submarines and torpedoes. On March 13, 1944 a German U572 submarine was discovered and together with the USS Haverfield, USS Hobson and British Services they fought for five hours before sinking the sub. On another trip they were hauling a large amount of gold bullion from the UK for safe keeping in Ottawa until the end of war. Following his discharge, he and his one brother and another brother-in-law began the Kendall Cab Company in Woodstock, Ontario. While ownership has changed over the years the name has been retained to this day. Ernie passed away in Woodstock on December 5, 1996. KASPER, Walter W. “Wally” Wally was born in Leader, Saskatchewan on April 12, 1921. He served in the RCAF with 408 Squadron, 1 Air Division from September 1941 to October 1945 and from November 1951 to October 1964. Wally completed a full operation tour in Bomber Command as a Lancaster pilot. He then flew Spitfires and Hurricanes in fighter affiliation roles, training incoming Bomber Command pilots to evade enemy aircraft. Wally rejoined the RCAF in 1951, instructing on T-33 aircraft, and then flying F-86 Sabres in Europe. After discharge in 1964, Wally graduated from the University of Toronto in Political Science, and then from the London School of Economics. He worked with CIDA and taught High School. Wally authored several books and poems, mostly about his wartime experiences. His awards include the Chevalier de la Legion d’honneur, Canadian Forces’ Decoration, Canadian Volunteer Service Medal with Overseas Bar, Aircrew Europe Bar, France and Germany Star, 1939-1945 Star and War Medal 1939-1945. He was inducted into the Canadian Hall of Valour in 2005. Wally was a member of The Royal Canadian Legion Kanata Branch 638 before his passing on November 19, 2015.
