245 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND HOOD, Jack Gordon Jack was born in Scugog Island, Ontario on January 22, 1922. He enlisted in the Air Force in 1939. After training he flew on the west coast of North America ferrying aircraft from California to British Columbia and Alaska during World War II. In England he flew with the RCAF 415 Squadron in Costal Command. Then when the Squadron converted to heavy bombers (HALIFAX) he safely completed close to a full operation of thirty sorties until Armistice. He was received the Defence Medal, the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal, the France-Germany Star and the WAGWireless Air Gunners Badge. Jack passed away on April 30, 1992. HOSSACK, John “Jack” Jack was born in Hamilton, Ontario on November 6, 1937. He joined the 2nd Canadian Guards on January 6, 1955 and trained in Petawawa. He served until 1965 specializing in demolitions. During that time he served as a Peacekeeper stationed at ForkYork, Soest in Germany. After an honourable discharge he served in the reserves in Brantford from 1967 to 1972. He trained recruits in a student militia program. He was a member of the Brantford and New Hamburg Royal Canadian Legions and is currently a member of Branch 259 in Listowel where he now resides. HORLOCK, Harvey Maxine Thomas Harvey was born in Toronto on February 10, 1936. He enlisted in the Army in September 1953. He wanted to get some training before he would be of age to volunteer for the Korean War, however the Korean War ended. In 1956 he became a Sergeant with the Toronto Scots. In 1954, Hurricane Hazel had hit Toronto and he along L/Cpl. James Guerin had the duties of burning the debris from their regiments clean up and the search for missing people and bodies. While burning the debris with flames as high as fifteen feet, L/Cpl. Guerin lost his balance while throwing logs into the fire and fell in. Harvey ran behind him and grabbed him to pull him out, saving him from being another casualty. In 1956-57, he was SOS from the Toronto Scots and TOS to the 2nd Battalion RCR at Wolseley Barracks in London, ON. Here the government wanted to know how a reserve solider would stand up. Harvey is an Aboriginal Metis Veteran. He was the first President of the Metis Veteran of Ontario and raised the flag in Toronto for the first time in 2001. He is an eight-year member of The Royal Canadian Legion Branch 10 East York Todmorden.
