237 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND HIRD, Jack Jack was born in Liverpool, England on July 3, 1933. He became involved in the military at the age of eighteen with the Lancashire Fusiliers. He joined in 1951, left NewYear’s Eve and sailed to Egypt. He was stationed in Ismailia and provided guard duties for the camp. Six months later he was redirected to Kenya to protect the population from the Mau Mau uprising revolt against British rule. Jack immigrated to Canada after his discharge from the Army in 1953. He and a friend ended up in Orillia where he joined The Royal Canadian Legion Branch 34, Orillia in December 2002. Jack is a regular fixture at the Branch. He has served as the 2nd Vice-President, handyman, museum curator and helper for many years around the Branch. He has been married twice and has two children both living in Orillia. HOARE, Edward Charles Edward was born in London, England on May 1, 1924. He served with the British Army No. 2 Commando, Special Forces in Italy at the Battle of Monte Cassino and River Senio during World War II. HLOZAN, Michael Jr. Michael was born in Silbas, Yugoslavia on November 11, 1918. Early, in 1942, he volunteered as a solider in the Canadian Army, being assigned to the 48th Highlander Regiment. He was sent overseas and fought in Italy. He suffered a severe injury during that campaign and finally was released from the Army in 1947. He was awarded: the 1939-1945 Star, the Italy Star, the Defence Medal, the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal with Bar and the War Medal 1939-1945. Michael married Theresa Bigelow and raised two boys, Brian and Mark. He worked at General Motors in Oshawa for 33 years and retired in 1974. Michael held many positions with The Royal Canadian Legion Branch 419 Port Perry, most notably President of the Branch from 1957 to 1958, again from 1968 to 1975, and was holding office when he died on January 3, 1976 at the young age of 57 from cancer.
