235 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND HILLIARD, Harry Clarence Harry was born in Waterloo, Ontario on July 31, 1886 to Thomas and Catherine L. (Sauder) Hilliard. He joined the military on September 23, 1915 and he sailed with the 5th Battalion to England on October 3, 1915 and posted to Witley. Harry crossed the channel with his unit to France in February 1916. On October 1, Harry received injuries to his arm and shoulder from machine gun fire and was transferred to the General Military Hospital in Boulogne. On May 3, 1917, he was moved to the Canadian Convalescent Hospital at Hillingdon House in Uxbridge and posted to light duty. On October 31, 1918, Harry was diagnosed as medically unfit for military service, embarked for Canada on November 22 and discharged on December 24, 1918. He married Flora Anne (Thayer) and they had two children, Catherine (Kekanovich) and Thomas T. In 1952, Harry was part of 100 Veterans who started Waterloo Branch 530 of The Royal Canadian Legion and is listed as a Charter Member. Harry died on November 28, 1962 at the age of 76, and is buried at Mount Hope Cemetery in Waterloo, Ontario. HIPFNER, Jack Jack was born in Montmartre, Saskatchewan on October 31, 1914. He enlisted with the South Saskatchewan Regiment, CASF on April 7, 1940. He served with Canada in the United Kingdom and Continental Europe. While overseas, he served in the Dieppe Raid on August 19, 1942, Bourguébus Ridge and Falaise Forêt de la Londe in France; Antwerp, Turnhout Canal and the Scheldt in Belgium; The Hochwald, the Rhine and Oldenburg, Germany. Jack was wounded in the Dieppe Raid and spent some time in the hospital in Scotland. Jack was discharged on demobilization on July 27, 1945 to return to civilian life. Jack received the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal and Clasp and the 1939-1945 Star. While in the service, he met the love of his life and married Ethel Fisher Clocherty in March 1944 and brought his war bride back to Canada from Scotland on the Ile de France, arriving in Montreal. Mrs. Hipfner travelled by train and met Jack out in Abernethy, SK, settling on the farm. A year and a half later they moved to St. Catharines and started their family of one girl and three boys. Jack started with General Motors shortly after arriving in St. Catharines and worked there until he passed away on March 2, 1979. HILTON, Margaret Patricia Margaret was born in Meaford, Ontario on May 24, 1925. She enlisted in the Navy WRCNS on August 29, 1944. She served as a Wren Printer pre-audit clerk at HMCS Bytown in Ottawa during World War II and was discharged in 1946. Margaret is a six-year member of The Royal Canadian Legion Armstrong Memorial Branch 19 in Sydney, NS.
