231 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND HENRY, Melvin “Mel” Mel was born on January 1, 1923. In November 1942, he enlisted with the Canadian Army where he received basic training as well as advanced training for Radio Operator. He was part of the troop convoys across the Atlantic. He joined the 2nd Field Core, Royal Canadian Engineers. As Radio Operator, Mel was stationed in France and then up to Oldenburg, Germany until the war ended in 1945. He was discharged from the Canadian Military in February 1946. Prior to the war, Mel helped build a bridge over Bragg Creek, Alberta. Mel was a member of The Royal Canadian Legion Branch 285 in Dundalk, ON. HEWTON, Herbert John Herbert was born on March 31, 1893 in the Township of Eastnor, County of Bruce, Ontario. On April 7, 1916 while living in Barrow Bay, Eastnor Township, Ontario Herbert enlisted in the 160th Bruce Battalion, CEF and served in France as a Sapper. On April 2, 1919 he was discharge and returned home. He was a member of The Royal Canadian Legion, Lion’s Head Branch 202. Herbert passed away on December 14, 1974 and is buried in the Eastnor Township Cemetery. HEPBURN, Robert George Robert was born in Quebec on December 12, 1919. He enlisted in the Army during World War II. His tank was hit by a roadside bomb which killed his partner and trapped George for several hours. He spent approximately six months in a Belgian Hospital; the Doctors thought he would never walk again, but he recovered and walked with no limp. He remained overseas and did office work until D-Day. He came across Juno Beach and home. For the most part George was a Gunner and trained many men to drive tanks. George passed away on March 2, 2012.
