227 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND HASKINS, Sterling Sterling was born in Walkerton, Bruce County, Ontario in May 1894. On March 21, 1916 while living in Clifford, Ontario Sterling enlisted with the 161 Huron Battalion, CEF and served in Canada, England and France. He was discharged on June 16, 1919 as Private and returned to Canada. He became a member of The Royal Canadian Legion, Lion’s Head Branch 202. In 1975, Sterling passed away and is buried in Eastnor Township Cemetery. HEBDEN, Charles Chancellor Charles was born on July 29, 1909 on a farm in Dawn Township, Lambton County, Ontario near Rutherford. Prior to enlistment, he had been a farmer and sometime telephone linesman. He enlisted in Windsor, Ontario on January 30, 1941. He served at various bases in Canada during World War II before being awarded his Air Gunner’s Badge and being commissioned (Pilot Officer) on October 13, 1941. He embarked for overseas on November 12, 1941. For a time he served as an instructor at a training facility. He was promoted to Flying Officer on October 1, 1942. He was posted to RCAF headquarters at Park Heaton, England on February 2, 1943. He was posted to 407 Demon Squadron on June 6, 1943. His plane disappeared on June 30, 1943 during anti-submarine patrol in a Wellington bomber over the Bay of Biscay. He service awards included 1939-1945 Star, the Atlantic Star, the Defence Medal, the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal with Clasp and the War Medal 1939-1945. HAWKES, George Alfred Borden George was born in Durham, Grey County, Ontario on November 7, 1916. The family moved to Richmond Hill in 1924. George enlisted on June 12, 1940 and listed his trade as a teamster. His Occupational history form of April 11, 1941 shows that he was employed as a Cutter working for Serva Manufacturing in Richmond Hill and that he had three years of experience working on a farm. He noted an employment preference as a ‘Flower Gardener’. Physical description at the time of enlistment: 5 feet, 6 ¾ inches tall; 133 lbs.; hazel eyes; brown hair; and a medium complexion. Private George Alfred Borden Hawkes died of wounds on December 21, 1943 while serving with the 48th Highlanders in Italy, at the battle for Ortona. He is buried in the Moro River Canadian War Cemetery in Ortona, Italy.
