223 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND HARE, Ernest Victor Ernest was born in Port Credit, Ontario on December 18, 1894. Ernest joined the Canadian Army in 1915 and went overseas with the Canadian Expeditionary Force with the 87th Battalion, Canadian Grenadier Guards; first to England then on to France. He was deployed at the Battle of Vimy Ridge inApril 1917 as a Lewis gunner. At Passchendaele Ernest was wounded in the legs by an exploding shell and was evacuated to England to recuperate. He was discharged on August 18, 1919. While in hospital in London he met his future wife Edith May Somers, returning to Canada in September 1919. He was a Royal Canadian Legion member of Branch 82 Port Credit. Ernest passed away on July 12, 1957. HARPER, Earl W. Earl was born on January 7, 1899 to Samuel and Lillian Harper in Carrick Township, Ontario. Earl had three brothers: Harold, Bertram and Emmerson. At the outbreak of World War I, Earl immediately joined the military. After the war, on September 29, 1920 Earl married Leah Lichty and they had seven children: Harold, Ruth, Gladys, Robert, Jan, Helen and Irene. Earl worked for 36 years at the Globe Furniture Company inWaterloo, Ontario. Earl was a nine-year member of The Royal Canadian Legion Waterloo Branch 530 when he passed away on June 26, 1961. He is buried in Memory Gardens, Breslau Ontario. Earl W. Harper’s name is listed on the Plaque #1 of the Waterloo Legion’s Veteran Memorial Wall. HARE, John Louis John was born on September 2, 1924 in Port Credit, Ontario. John joined the RCNVR in 1943. After training in Nova Scotia as an ASDIC operator, he was drafted to the River class frigate HMCS Chebogue, which lay in Esquimalt, BC and brought her back to Halifax through the Panama Canal. In October 1944 while escorting a convoy of sixty ships in the Irish Sea, Chebogue was torpedoed by U1227, blowing 30 feet of her stern off and killing three of her crew. The ship stayed afloat, was towed back to England but was written off as a total loss. Transferring to the Flower class corvette HMCS Chambly after the torpedoing, John returned to Canada for leave then went back to sea in the Castle class corvette HMCS Giffard. John stayed in Giffard escorting convoys till late in the war, then joining and staying in the Castle class corvette HMCS Bowmanville until his discharge on November 25, 1945. John was a member of The Royal Canadian Legion Branch 82 Port Credit for over seventy years and had served as a Past President. John died December 12, 2018.
