217 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND HANLEY, Robert Earl Robert was born in Harris, Saskatchewan on July 9, 1920. He went to the Technical College in Saskatoon to learn aircraft maintenance. He enlisted in July 1940 and served for the RCAF in Canada, England and Normandy. He attended university in London, England and became an Engineer officer. He was in the 2nd Tactical Air Force as the military moved across to Normandy, France; Holland and in Hamburg, Germany. He came home in July 1945, re-enlisted in Saskatoon in 1953. He served across Canada until 1969. He retired and went to work for the Federal Government. He resides in Ottawa with his wife and family and is a member of The Royal Canadian Legion. HANNA, William “Bill” Bill was born in Northern Ireland on August 20, 1931. He joined the Royal Navy in 1951 after the Korean War started. After Boot Camp he was assigned to the Fleet Air Arm as an Air Radio and Radar Tech. His first posting was to 737 Squadron at Royal Naval Air Station, Northern Ireland. He had joined the Navy to see the world and ended up fifty miles from his hometown. In 1952, he was posted to front line Squadron and boarded the aircraft carrier HMS Ocean which sailed for Korea where they spent ten months. After two more sea going postings he returned to Eglinton, where he met his future wife Patricia, a member of the Women’s Royal Naval Service. Bill’s seven-year hitch ended in 1958 and they moved to his hometown where he joined the Army Reserves, serving with The Royal Ulster Rifles until Bill and his wife immigrated to Canada in 1965. When they were settled, Bill once again joined the Canadian Army reserves as a Second lieutenant working with 557 The Lorne Scots Army Cadet Corps and after nineteen years retired as a Captain with a total service of 32 years. Bill attended the Veterans coffee time weekly gatherings at The Royal Canadian Legion Branch 220 in Shelburne, ON for a number of years before he passed away on January 3, 2018. HANNA, Barbara Patricia Patricia was born on May 1, 1936 in Northern Ireland. She joined the military in 1954, trained at HMS Dauntless, near Reading, then HMS Drake, Plymouth, from there was drafted to HMS Harrier in Pembrokeshire, South Wales and her final draft was to HMS Gannet, Eglington, Northern Ireland. Patricia married William Hanna in 1957. She had great adventures and loved every minute of it. She was a member of The Royal Canadian Legion Branch 220 in Shelburne, ON. Patricia passed away on May 4, 2012.
