211 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND GROENEWEG, Bastian “Bas” Bas was born on November 5, 1931 in Monarch, Alberta to Marie and Gerrit Groeneweg. On June 12, 1952, he became a member of the RCMP being sworn in at Lethbridge, Alberta. Upon completion of training, he was transferred to Prince Rupert, BC for five years before being transferred to HQ Division in Ottawa on January 2, 1958. He spent the remainder of this service in Ottawa and retired on December 17, 1979. His work in Ottawa was in Identification Services working in a technical environment, handwriting comparison. Following retirement from the RCMP, he worked for thirteen and one-half years for the Bank of Canada. GUTHRIE, Douglas Tobin Douglas was born in Kimbrae, Saskatchewan on January 25, 1918. He was the middle of three brothers who volunteered to join the Canadian Armed Forces during World War II. He enlisted with the Highland Light Infantry of Canada, RCCS in June 1940. Over the next five years Douglas was treated to a walking tour of Sicily, Italy, France, Germany, Belgium and Holland – a trip he never mentioned again. While overseas he met and married Elizabeth Strathdee of Scotland, a member of the ATS, the women’s branch of the British Army. Douglas returned home to Canada in August 1945 aboard the ‘Ile de France’. It would be almost a year before his bride was able to join him in Canada arriving at Pier 21 in Halifax aboard the same ‘Ile de France’. As well as bringing British brides to Canada the ship was also bringing wounded Canadian servicemen home at last. He was awarded the 1939-1945 Star, the Italy Star, the France and Germany Star, the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal, the Defence Medal and Clasp as well as the War Medal 1939-1945. The couple made their home in Crewson’s Corners near Acton, Ontario where they raised two children. Douglas passed away in February 2005. He was a member of The Royal Canadian Legion Acton Branch 197 for seventy years. GROOT-KOERKAMP, Lambertus Bernardus Lambertus was born on August 8, 1933 in the Netherlands. He served compulsory service fromAugust 6, 1953 until December 1, 1956 in the Netherlands Army in the Netherlands and Germany as a member of the Light Anti-Aircraft. During this time in Germany his unit patrolled the border between East and West Germany. He immigrated to Canada in May 1958 but as a Netherlands Citizen he was bound to serve if needed and he joined the Canadian 4th Princess Louise Dragoons to complete his NATO obligation and was a member until the unit was disbanded on December 12, 1964. Lambertus is a Royal Canadian Legion member of Branch 638 Kanata.
