203 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND GRANT, Charles Francis Charles was born on February 26, 1895 in Oyster Ponds, Nova Scotia the youngest son of SusanWilkinson and Clement Charles Grant. In his youth, he was a fisherman. At the age of 23, Charles was drafted into the army. He was sworn in at Aldershot, NS. After his basic training, Charles served with the First Depot Battalion, Nova Scotia Regiment at No. 6 Military Depot, Halifax. In the summer of 1918, he was posted overseas to serve with the 25th Regiment. While overseas, he marched through Belgium and Holland, and was in Germany at the end of the war. Six months after the war ended, Private Charles Grant was discharged. He lived at Oyster Ponds until 1929 when he moved to St. Francis Harbour. During this time, he was a fisherman and worked in the woods. Around 1936, Charles moved to Sand Point, Guysborough County, where he became Lighthouse Keeper at Eddy Point Light, Sand Point. He retired in 1960, at the age of 65. Charles married Bessie M. Sceles on November 1, 1923. Together they raised eight children. On August 30, 1964, at the age of 69, Charles passes away in the camp Hill Hospital, Halifax. Charles’ son Robert served in World War II. GRANZIOL, Dino Dino was born in Spresiano, Italy on July 24, 1921. He immigrated to Canada from Italy at age seven with his mother, sister and brother. He attendedAssumption College School and earned his high school letter in sports while also making the All-City team for football. He enlisted in the Army on September 15, 1942 with 48 Highlanders Canadian Infantry Division. Dino served in North Africa, Italy and England He was discharged on February 8, 1946. After the war, he brought his British war bride Mary home to Windsor, Ontario to whom he was married for 58 years. He and his wife raised three children and six grandchildren. Dino earned his living working at Brewers Warehouse Company until he retired in 1981, at the time of his retirement he was store manager. Dino spent many happy retired years in multiple cities including Flesherton, Markdale, Parkhill and Windsor, Ontario. Dino was a jovial man who enjoyed life and all it offered while being surrounded by family and friends. He passed away on November 17, 2009. Dino was a member of The Royal Canadian Legion Branch 341 Parkhill. GRANT, Robert Wilfred Roy Robert was born in Oyster Ponds, Nova Scotia the son of Bessie M. (Sceles: 19011973) and Charles Francis Grant (1895-1964) on June 23, 1926. In his teen years, he worked as a steelworker at Trenton. Three days before his eighteenth birthday, Robert enlisted with the Royal Canadian Navy. Robert was first posted onboard HMCS Queen Charlotte, PEI. Throughout the war, he would also serve aboard HMCS Mic Mac, Iroquois Class Destroyers HMCS Huron (281) and HMCS Iroquois (280), and the MacKenzie Class Destroyer HMCS Qu’Appelle (264). He served at Halifax and along the coastline of eastern Canada. On September 21, 1946, Robert was discharged and awarded the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal and Clasp. After the war, Robert entered the printing industry at the Queens Printer, Ottawa and then at Queens Printers, Victoria, BC where he became Product Manager. Robert married his wife, Betty Beryl (Wamback) on July 22, 1949 and together they have two daughters. Currently, Robert is living in Victoria, BC. Robert’s father, Charles and his uncle, Harry Sceles both served in World War I. He has been a member of the Esquimalt Docks Legion Branch for 25 years.
