201 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND GOUGH, James Earl Kitchener James was born in Francis, Saskatchewan on July 11, 1916. He enlisted in the Canadian Army (Active) to serve in World War II on December 2, 1939 at #1 District Depot London, Ontario. Prior to enlisting James had already served six years with the Middlesex and Huron Regiment in Strathroy, Ontario. James went on to serve with the #1 Royal Canadian Regiment (RCR) as an Infantryman, but while serving in England he was trained as a Wireless Operator serving with the #1 Canadian Signals Reinforcement Unit (1CSRU). He was part of the Central Mediterranean Force seeing action in Italy. He also went on to serve in France, Germany and Belgium. His medals include the 1939-1945 Star, Italy Star, France and Germany Star, Defence Medal, Canadian Volunteer Service Medal with Clasp and War Medal 1939-1945. Due to demobilization, James was honourably discharged on March 13, 1946 at the rank of Lance Corporal at London, ON. He passed away on December 5, 1976. GRAINGER, Joseph “Joe” Joseph was born on October 20, 1887 in Mulmur Township, Ontario. He was one of eight children. Joe worked on the family farm, was a carpenter’s helper and in 1907 went to Collingwood attending Business College. He loved baseball and even owned a race horse. Joe enlisted for World War I at Collingwood, A Company, 157th Battalion. They were billeted in private homes and trained marching on the ice of Kempenfelt Bay until Camp Borden could be moved into. With the 116th Battalion, he went overseas on November 22, 1915 serving in France and England. He was wounded in the left shoulder on August 12, 1918. Joe lay in the trenches three days until he could be taken for treatment in Liverpool, England. While in the trench he could hear the Germans marching past. He returned home on December 28 and after convalescing at the Whitby Convalescent Camp, receiving treatment and training to become a carpenter. Joseph married in 1920 and farmed with his wife and two daughters. His shoulder injury plagued him for years. He was a member of the Great War Veterans’ and later The Royal Canadian Legion, Shelburne Branch 220 for many years. Joseph passed away January 23, 1973. GOVIER, Albert H. Albert was born in Hullett Township, Huron County, Ontario on July 28, 1920. He enlisted in the Army on June 17, 1941 and served with the 4th Division Petrol Coy, RCASC (AF) in England, France and Holland during World War II. He was discharged from service on January 23, 1946. Albert was awarded the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal, 1939-1945 Star, France and Germany Star, Defence Medal and War Medal 1939-1945. He was a member of The Royal Canadian Legion Goderich Branch 109 and Oshawa Branch 43 for a total of over fifty years. Albert passed away on May 13, 2004.
