479 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND WILSON, George George was born in Toronto, Ontario on January 30, 1925. After high school, George enlisted in the RCAF in 1943 during World War II. He travelled to PEI for bombing and gunnery school at Mount Pleasant. Soon after, George received more intensive training with pilots and radio operators in Aldergrove, Ireland. From there George was posted to Milltown Scotland, an airfield that was employed for the display of combat gliders under Operation Tundall. The operation was intended to fool the Germans into believing the RAF was a serious threat to Norway. George ran a few patrols with the Coastal Command there before the war ended. George then attended the University of Western Ontario and entered into various construction jobs. He met his wife Irene on a blind date in 1957. They married, and had two daughters and lived in Montreal. George resides now at the Southampton Care Centre where Irene visits regularly. WING, Harold Harold was born in Ophir, Ontario on July 21, 1909. During World War II, he enlisted on October 15, 1941 to the Sault Ste. Marie and Sudbury Regiment, Canadian Army and later transferred to the Royal Regiment of Canada on May 28, 1942. He originally trained as a butcher and was embarked to the UK on June 12, 1942 and employed as rifleman. He served in France commencing on July 6, 1944. He returned to Canada on escort duty to Monteith, Ontario in October 1945 and was honourably discharged on December 9, 1945. He was awarded a good conduct badge in October 1943, the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal and Clasp, the War Service Badge, the 1939-1945 France and Germany Star and the Defence Medal in December 1945. Harold was employed in Bruce Mines as lighthouse keeper and later as a deck hand on the St. Joseph Island Ferry until bridge construction in 1972. Harold passed away in Bruce Mines on February 3, 1978. WILSON, Mervin Robert Mervin was born on July 21, 1895 and raised on a farm near Macville, Ontario. He found he disliked farming so he joined the Army in Toronto on September 7, 1917 with the T&S Forestry Br. After training in Camp Borden he was shipped overseas. He served during World War I in England and fought in France before returning to Canada. He was discharged on March 17, 1919. He then joined the CNR from which he retired in 1960. Mervin passed away on November 6, 1973.
