459 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND VICKERS, Lee Royden Royden was born in Lion’s Head, Ontario on May 10, 1924. He enlisted in the Army on February 16, 1943 with the RCASC-Artillery. He served in Canada, Italy and the Central Mediterranean Area during World War II. He was wounded in Italy though it was never reported as he wanted to stay with his squadron. As a result, he had many pieces of shrapnel removed from his leg over the years. Royden became a cook in the service. He was awarded the 1939-1945 Star, Italy Star, War Medal, Defence Medal and the Volunteer Service Medal with Clasp. After the war and his discharge on April 4, 1946, Royden owned and operated two Shell Gas Stations in Woodstock until his late sixties and then became a Corrections Officer at jails in Woodstock and London. Royden passed away on March 6, 2004. VIRTUE, Charles Wesley “Wes” Wes was born in Holland Township, Grey County, Ontario on February 18, 1891. When he was four years old the family moved to Bruce County and farmed in Arran Township. He enlisted in the Army on March 16, 1916 with the 160th Battalion. He served with the 3rd Battalion Gun Corps in France, Belgium and England during World War I. He was at Vimy Ridge. He was discharged on March 29, 1919. He married Ella Robinson on June 21, 1920. They had four children, Glen, David, Myrtle and Olive. Wes passed away on August 26, 1975 and is buried in Hillcrest Cemetery in Tara, Ontario. VICKERS, William Dennis Leroy William was born on January 25, 1943 in Toronto. He followed in the footsteps of his father, John R. Vickers and enlisted in the Army. He served for seven years from 1960 to 1967 in London, Petawawa, Ottawa, Cyprus and Picton. He returned to his home town of Brantford where he became a superintendent of a condo building with his wife Rebecca for many years.
