457 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND VANZANT, William Mark William was born in Pilkington Township, Wellington South, Ontario on October 20, 1919. He enlisted in the Air Force in 1942 and in 1943 was assigned to a Halifax Bomber crew with the 434 Squadron, Thould Crew 18 during World War II. ‘Failed to return’ from Nuremberg on August 27/28, 1943 as they were shot down. Two crew members died; five became Prisoners of War. He was held in Hut 36B at Stalag Luft IV-B near Mühlberg, Saxony from August 30, 1943 until liberated by Soviet Red Army on April 23, 1945. At Buckingham Palace, he attended a huge garden party that was hosted by King George VI and his wife Queen Elizabeth for freed Prisoners of War. He returned to Canada, married Betty Norrine Ennis on May 4, 1946. They lived in Newmarket, Ontario and had four children: Brad, Terry, Linda and Nancy. He worked at Avro Canada on the production line for Avro Arrow CF-105 until it was cancelled in 1959; later at McDonnell Douglas Aircraft. He retired in 1974. William passed away on March 8, 2007. VICKERS, John Raymond John was born in April 4, 1920 in Durham, Ontario. He enlisted in the Army on May 17, 1943 and served in Canada for nine short months from May 17, 1943 to February 18, 1944 before being discharged with health problems. He died at a young age of 43 on April 29, 1963 leaving behind his wife Frances and eight children, two boys and six girls; Dennis, Howard, Patricia, Gale, Jackie, Sandy, Mary-Jo and Kelly. VICKERS, George Hilbert George was born on August 10, 1925 in Brantford, Ontario. Private Vickers enlisted in the Army with the Toronto Scottish Unit during World War II. He was wounded while serving with the Algonquin Regiment in France. He was captured and was a Prisoner of War. He remained in the service after the war and while on a training mission in British Columbia – Gulf of Georgia, his plane – Dakota Aircraft, suddenly iced up and crashed on January 28, 1953– all seven aboard the aircraft were killed.
