455 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND UMPHERSON (JENKINS), Jane Jane was born on January 16, 1923 in Pembroke, Wales. She enlisted in the Navy on June 16, 1943 with the Women’s Royal Navy Service. In September 1943 she was posted to the port of Dover which was being shelled continually by German long range artillery from occupied France. Dover was considered as part of the front line and was called ‘Hellfire Corner’ to reflect the destruction that rained on the buildings and inhabitant for four years, up to a thousand shells a week. Here she was a degausser. Degaussing was a top secret process of decreasing or eliminating a remnant magnetic field in the hull of ships; this was essential in trying to counter the German magnetic mines which were playing havoc with the British Fleet. Jane also helped with loading of landing craft as Dover was also used as one of the jump off points on D-day. She was discharged on October 19, 1945. Jane met RCAF pilot William Earl Umpherson during the war and they were married in July 1945. Jane settled in Canada with her husband soon after the war ended where they raised a family. UTTLEY, Earl L. Earl was born on October 12, 1928 in Kitchener, Ontario. Earl joined the Royal Canadian Army Medical Corps on November 12, 1948 and was sent to Korea to participate in that conflict. He left the Army in November 1951, but re-enrolled in January 1952 and served another five years until his release on April 24, 1956. UNWIN, Douglas Sidney “Doug” Douglas was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba on January 22, 1924. He enlisted in the Air Force on December 1, 1942 during World War II with the 427 Lion Squadron. He has a memorial Brick at the Juno Beach Center in Normandy to honour his service. When Doug left the Forces on April 30, 1946 after serving a year in England he worked for Inco in Levack, Ontario for 35 years. He retired in 1982 and lived in Levack until 1986. He currently lives in Lively with his wife Anne. They have five children, many grand and great grandchildren and have been married for 65 years. He is a 34 year member of the Legion Branch 503 Onaping Falls.
