435 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND STELL, Harold James Harold was born in Brooklin, Ontario on July 23, 1924. He enlisted in the Air Force during World War II with #570 Squadron and #9 B&G Mont Joli. He was engaged in resupply operations over Arnhem, Holland when his plane was hit by flak and crashed in flames at Heteren, Gelderland on September 23, 1944. Sgt. Air Gunner Stell is buried in the Cemetery at Heteren. He was posthumously awarded the Operational Wings of the Royal Canadian Air Force on October 29, 1946. STEWART, Duncan Alexander Duncan was born in Corbetton, Melancton Township, Ontario on January 11, 1920. He enlisted in the Army in April 1942 with the B Company, 10th Platoon. He served in England and France during World War II as a gunner. Private Duncan A. Stewart was wounded twice before he was discharged from the service. He was awarded a Life Membership by the MacDonald Branch 183 in Kincardine, Ontario. Duncan passed away on January 29, 1994. STEPHEN, John John was born on September 5, 1923 in Peabody, Grey Co., Ontario. He enlisted in the Army in October 1942 with the Cameron Highlanders of Ottawa, Royal Canadian Artillery. John drove a Bren gun carrier during World War II and saw a very good friend get killed. He was wounded, recovered in England and returned to Europe for the rest of the war. He was discharged in January 1946 but re-enlisted during the Korean War in November 1954 and served until November 1960. He served in Canada, England, France, Belgium, Holland and Germany. He was a member of the Chesley Legion Branch 144 for forty years where he also served as President. John passed away on April 2, 2000.
