433 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND STEEL, Charles William Charles was born in Chiswick, England on November 8, 1914. Charles joined the Territorial Army in the UK as a gunner in November 1938 and was embodied into the Regular Army on outbreak of World War II in September 1939 as a Sergeant. He was commissioned as an officer with his regiment the following January, served in the UK, overseas and was appointed Adjutant in 1942 with the rank of Captain. Subsequently he became a Staff Captain with the Middle East Forces and on return to the UK served as Adjutant of a large Convalescent hospital in England. He was discharged on March 7, 1945 after seven and a half years in the Army, four and a half of which were overseas. In March 1950 he rejoined the Territorial Army, served eight years as Signal’s Officer with the Lovat Scouts and a further eight years as Permanent Staff Officer (PSO) with the Royal Signals Unit. After 23.5 years of service, he left the Army with the rank of Captain and moved to Canada in May1967 where he joined The Royal Canadian Legion Elliot Lake Branch 561 and was awarded Life Membership. Charles passed away on July 7, 2001 at the age of 96. STELL, Gordon Harvey Gordon was born on December 13, 1925 in Brooklin, Ontario. He joined the Navy in York, Toronto on June 5, 1944. He enlisted with the HMCS Cataraqui then to Cornwallis after basic training to HMCS Nipigon, a minesweeper. Gordon served in Canada and on the High Seas during World War II. He was discharged on February 20, 1946. After service, he worked in Tool & Dye at General Motors for forty years. Gordon is now retired and living in Oshawa. He is a member of the Brooklin Legion Branch. STEER, Richard E. Richard was born on June 28, 1921 in Utica, Ontario, Reach Township. He enlisted in the Army in Queens Own Rifles then transferred to RCAF for air crew training. He served in Canada during World War II. After his discharge he married Mina Dobson, a teacher, raised a family, operated a family farm and worked at General Motors for 26 years. After retirement they travelled the world. Richard passed away on July 3, 2008.
