429 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND SPEARS, Robert Alvin “Bob” Robert was born on November 3, 1919 in Toronto, Ontario and joined the Canadian Army where he served at Simcoe, Ontario training in discipline. He later commenced playing with the 48th Highlanders of Canada pipe band (M) as a tenor drummer and served for many years through the 1950’s to the 1970’s. He also helped train the 48th Highlanders Cadet Corps. Bob travelled extensively with the pipe band and was also qualified as a military truck driver. In civilian life, Bob was employed at Toronto Hydro-Electric System as a meter reader, warehouseman and stockman. Bob passed away on April 10, 1993. SPENCER, Douglas Douglas was born in Montreal, Quebec on January 31, 1926. He enlisted in the Navy and served during World War II with the RCN, medic. He took basic training at HMCS York. He served in Stadacona (Halifax), Avalon (Newfoundland) and Donnacona (Montreal). He met his wife to be, Velma Shaw, a WREN, in Montreal. They married in 1949 and had two daughters. After the war he worked as a sales rep in Ontario and Quebec. He retired to Markdale in 1987. Douglas passed away on March 12, 1992. SPEER, Walter Hughes “Watt” Walter was born in Arran Township on December 7, 1916. He enlisted in the Army on December 11, 1941. He served in the Artillery in Holland, England and Canada during World War II. He was severely injured with shrapnel wounds in the head, arm and leg while in Belgium in 1944. He married Jean Walker in 1951 and they had a total of five girls. Watt sailed the Great Lakes, was in partnership with his brother Fred in International Harvester Company and the Post Master of the Tara Post Office and an ardent fisherman. Watt passed away in 1989 and is buried in Hillcrest Cemetery in Tara. He was a member of the Tara Legion Branch 383 for 42 years.
