427 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND SMITH, Norman George Norman was born on August 26, 1916 in Palmerston, Ontario. He enlisted in the Royal Canadian Navy on July 17, 1942 and was sent to Halifax, Nova Scotia for training. He served in World War II aboard the HMCS York, Cornwallis, Stadacona and Charlottetown in Canada as well as on the High Seas. After his discharge on September 11, 1945, he sailed on the Great Lakes for five years. He eventually worked a long career at the CPR until his retirement. He proudly wore his service medals on his Royal Canadian Legion blazer as an active member of the Legion for sixty years. Norman passed away on August 8, 2005. SOMERVILLE, William James James was born in June 1935 in Cobourg, Ontario. He served with the Royal Canadian Regiment (Infantry) for four years after enlisting in 1952. He was stationed in CFB Lahr in West Germany under NATO during the Cold War. He was a private and a cook over in Germany. He was discharged on March 1, 1956. James passed away on April 20, 2001. SMITH, Thomas Cyril Thomas was born in Fisherman’s Island, Toronto, Ontario on June 26, 1896. He enlisted in the Army on February 24, 1916 in Toronto for military service in World War I at the age of nineteen with the Canadian Over-seas Expeditionary Force as part of the 83rd Battalion. He embarked from Halifax, Nova Scotia on April 28, 1916 aboard S.S. Olympic and disembarked at Liverpool, England on May 7, 1916. He landed in France on July 29, 1916, served with the 52nd Canadian Battalion and then transferred to 4th Canadian Military Rifles. He was wounded by shell concussion on October 26, 1917 at Passchendaele. He recovered and returned to duty where he was wounded again by gunshot on the left side on December 25, 1917 at Hill 70. After many months recovering, he again returned to duty and served on until he was discharged on March 20, 1919. Thomas married Hilda Palframan on July 10, 1920 in Toronto. They had seven children and Thomas passed away on July 29, 1933.
