417 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND SHILLING, James James was born in Rama First Nation, Ontario on March 23, 1890, the son of Joe and Amy Shilling. He served with the 23rd Regiment (Northern Pioneers) before World War I. He enlisted in the Army on March 9, 1916 and served with the 114th Overseas Battalion and 122nd Battalion during World War I. He received a medical discharge. He was a brother of Richard, Charles and John. SHORT, Albert Albert was born on December 16, 1924 in Belleville, Ontario. He enlisted in the Navy in 1941 and served during World War II. He was captain for a day for enlisting under age and getting found out while at sea. He served on Corvettes. He was discharged in 1945. Albert passed away on March 18, 2016. SHIPLEY, Russell John “Russ” Russell was born on August 1, 1914 in Toronto, Ontario. When Russ enlisted in the Army on September 5, 1939, his medical disclosed an enlarged heart so he was not eligible to serve overseas. But despite the enlarged heart he was posted to Camp Borden in Ontario with the 48th Highlanders as a Physical Training Instructor, which included running 3.5 miles and marching 25 miles. Russ had only a Grade 8 education when he enlisted but during his service he upgraded to Junior Matriculation level, enabling him to be commissioned as a Lieutenant. He was discharged on August 17, 1945. After retiring from active service he took his leadership skills and “big heart” to The Royal Canadian Legion, ultimately becoming President of the Newmarket Branch in 1962 to 1963. As a Legion member he was involved in many community activities in Newmarket, such as organizing the Legion Pipe Band, leading community Remembrance Day services, and even establishing a student award in the high school for descendants of Veterans. Russ was also a long time member of the Newmarket Veteran Association. Russ passed away on March 8, 1994.
