409 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND SHAW, Elwood Thomas Elwood was born on September 3, 1925 in Clarksburg, Ontario. Elwood worked on lake boats out of Toronto before enlisting in the Navy in 1942. He served on the East Coast of Canada and in Britain with the British Fleet Air Arm as a stoker. He took part in the liberation of the Channel Islands. He served in Canada, England and Scotland during World War II. Elwood was discharged in 1946. After the war he bought a farm in Heathcote, ON – married and raised nine children. Elwood passed away in July of 1995. SHAW, William Barret William was born in Ridgetown, Ontario on April 19, 1913. He served in Army during World War II with the Royal Canadian Engineers. William enlisted in 1939 and served through Northwest Europe, England, France, Belgium, Netherlands and Germany. He was wounded near the end of the war and was discharged in 1946. He received the France and Germany Star, 1939-1945 Star, Canadian Volunteer Service Medal with Clasp, the Defence Medal and War Medal. William was a member of Legion Branch 524 Port Burwell for over thirty years. William passed away on October 18, 1988. SHAW, Velma Mabel Velma was born on July 3, 1923 in Clarksburg, Ontario. She joined the Navy in November 1944 with the WREN Signals as a switchboard operator during World War II and served in Galt (Conestoga), Montreal (Hochelaga and Donnacona) and Halifax (Stadacona). Velma was discharged in March 1946. She met her husband, also in the Navy in Montreal and married in 1949. She had two daughters and now lives in Markdale, Ontario. She has been a member of the Legion Markdale for 25 years.
