407 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND SEATON, Harvey M. Harvey was born in Waubaushene, Ontario on July 18, 1919. He enlisted in the Army on July 4, 1940 with the Royal Regiment of Canada. He saw action during the Dieppe Raid, on August 19, 1942. He landed at Blue Beach with C Company, 14 Platoon, Royal Regiment of Canada. He was one of the few to successfully cross the fire swept beach, take up a position and return fire from the seawall where so many from his regiment were killed or wounded. During the exchange of fire he was wounded in the left leg by a piece of grenade shrapnel. He continued to return fire with his Bren gun until ordered to withdraw. In the evacuation he assisted the wounded onto the landing craft. He was one of only 65 from his regiment to make it back to England that day, 209 were killed and 264 were taken prisoner. For his bravery he received a Mention in Dispatch and was one of fifteen soldiers at Dieppe who the French awarded the Croix de Guerre, with Silver Star attached. He was discharged on August 28, 1944. Harvey was a member of the Legion Beaverbrook, Branch 316 for 43 years. He passed away on December 13, 1988. SHANTZ, Merle Lloyd Merle was born in Kitchener, Ontario in 1914 to Percival L. Shantz and Catherine (Sachs) Shantz. He completed his schooling at KCI in Kitchener. He joined the Army in 1939 and was assigned to the Royal Canadian Regiment. After basic training, Merle was shipped to England and then into Continental Europe. During the war, Merle was promoted to Corporal, Sergeant and Staff Sergeant. In his 28 years in the Army, Merle and his family lived in many different towns in Canada and Soest, Germany. In 1956, Merle transferred to the Royal Canadian Provost Corps, passed the RCMP course and advanced to the rank of Warrant Officer II. He received an honourable discharge in 1967. Merle and his wife Hilda (Schwartz) had four children, Judy, Bruce, Barry and Debra. After his military life, he worked at Toronto General Hospital as Supervisor of Building Services and lastly Sheridan College teaching law enforcement. He was a member of Royal Canadian Legion Branch 114 Oakville. In his eightieth year, Merle died of a heart attack and his ashes are at Camp Borden. SEFTEL, Nelson Walter Nelson was born in Hampstead Ontario on November 12, 1910 to Adeline Katherine Seftel. In 1924 at the age of fourteen, Nelson completed grade V111 at S.S. #19 Wilmot Township Public School, he then proceeded in learning to become a motor mechanic. Nelson joined the Army on July 24, 1942 and having a licensed trade he was put to work on various bases in Canada looking after anything with a motor. He served in Canada with the 9th Battery during World War II. After the war Nelson was kept on, constantly repairing the broken down trucks, jeeps, etc. On March 16, 1946 Nelson received an honourable discharge. He returned home and started working in Kitchener as a mechanic. He married Vera Ida Neeb in 1947. In 1962 Nelson Seftel, at the age of 52 was killed in a road accident by a person travelling through a red light and he is buried in the Saint Peter’s Lutheran Cemetery, Kitchener.
