403 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND SCHMITT, Earl Sangster Earl was born in Waterloo on May 14, 1920. Warrant Officer 1st Class Earl Schmitt served with the Royal Canadian Electrical and Mechanical Engineers (RCEME). He enlisted in May 1941, served throughout England and Europe and was discharged in December 1945. He re-enlisted in April 1949 and served until April 1957. Missing the service, he enlisted again in October 1957 and served until October 1960. During his service, Earl earned the 1939-1945 Star, the France and Germany Star, the Defence Medal, the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal and Clasp, the War Medal 1939-1945, and in 2002 the War Medal of Remembrance in relation to the liberation of Holland. After the war he worked in Waterloo for a time and then travelled and worked throughout Canada. In 1980 he returned to Waterloo where he worked as a mechanic for K-Mart in Conestoga Mall until his retirement. Earl joined the Legion in July 1969 belonging to the Waterloo Branch 530. Earl passed away on October 25, 2010 in his 91st year. SCHOFIELD, Morris Arden Morris was born in Kings County, Nova Scotia on August 3, 1928. He enlisted in the Army on June 7, 1951 and served with the RCHA Signal Corps in Canada, Korea and Egypt, Belgium and Congo. Morris was discharged on October 10, 1972. He was awarded the Korea Medal, UN Services Medal, UN Congo Medal, UN Emergency Force Medal and Canadian Forces Decoration. He was a member of Hespeler Legion Branch 272. Morris passed away on July 13, 2011. SCHOENFIELD, Barbara Charmaine Barbara was born in Toronto’s east end on October 15, 1934. She enlisted in the RCAF Squadron 409 in February 1954, as a FCO (Flight Control Operator). After training she was stationed at Falconbridge, a Radar Station near Sudbury, Ontario. While there she was moved to administration due to a shortage of typists, later she re-mustered to admin and obtained Group III, Messes and Institutes. The next posting was to Sea Island a flying base in Vancouver, after a year or so she was posted to Greenwood, Nova Scotia which hosted the Greenwood Bombers Football team of which she became a Cheer Leader. Barbara was discharged in May 1958, and married a Pilot Officer in June of that year. She was a member of the Todmordon Legion Branch 10 in Toronto for 37 years and is now with Acton Legion Branch 197 and living in Ballinafad, Ontario.
