401 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND SAUNDERS, William G. “Bill” William was born in Pamberheath, UK on March 6, 1930. He was conscripted in the British Army on June 3, 1948 at the Bulford Camp near Salisbury, UK. After twelve weeks of basic training, he was shipped out to Krefeld in West Germany to join the 1st Battalion The Wiltshire Regiment, and infantry regiment, it was there that Bill’s driving career got started. He took a driving course and graduated in the top ten but he only made a passing grade with the maintenance side of the course. All of this and he was accepted and became a member of the Motor Transport Company; as a result, he got to see a lot of Germany. Bill was discharged on February 18, 1950. He arrived in Canada in April 1956 and drove buses, subways and street cars for the city of Toronto before retiring in 1989. He has been a member of the Legion Branch 531 for thirty years. SAWYER, Sylvester E. Sylvester was born on May 17, 1878 in Rama, First Nation, Ontario. He was married to Laura Iron just before he enlisted in the Army on June 26, 1916. They had two daughters together – Mary Ann and Eliza Jane. He served with the 157th Overseas Battalion in England and France during World War I. He was discharged in 1917. Sylvester passed away in 1936. SAWYER, Ben Ben was born in Rama, First Nation, Ontario on December 22, 1886. He enlisted in the Army on January 21, 1916. He served alongside his brother Sylvester when he was with the 157th Battalion; he also served with the 116th Battalion. He served in England and France during World War I. He returned to Canada and was discharged in May 1917. He married Caroline Taylor. Ben passed away on June 8, 1969.
