399 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND RUTHERFORD, Robert N. Robert was born in London, Ontario on October 16, 1920. He enlisted in the Army on September 4, 1939. He was with the 6th Canadian Tank Regiment IST Hussars out of London, ON during World War II. He was a member of Allied Expeditionary Force. Robert was wounded in action on July 25, 1944. He was discharged on July 26, 1945. He was awarded the 1939-1945 Star, the France and Germany Star, the Battle of Britain Medal, the 1939-1945 Canadian Volunteer Service Medal and the Defence Medal. He went through six years of war suffering from a perforated Ear Drum and died in a horrific truck accident. He was driving a large loaded Hopper Truck when the collision occurred. Robert died on October 24, 1965. SAMPSON, David S. David was born in June 13, 1964 in Toronto, Ontario. He joined the Toronto Scottish Regiment in 1983 as an Anti-Armor Infantry Gunner. He was promoted to Sergeant in December 1988. He re-mustered to Regular Forces as Vehicle Technician in 1989 and attended the Canadian Force School of Electrical Mechanical Engineers. After eight months of training, he was posted to 2 Service Battalion in Petawawa and then in 1990, posted to The Canadian Airborne Regiment Service Commando on the same Base. In June 1994, he posted back to 2 Service Battalion as training instructor and secondary Jumpmaster for the Canadian Airborne Regiment. In August 1996, he was posted to Edmonton, Alberta with 3PPCLI as Vehicle Technician and Jumpmaster in Para Company. After a one-year posting with 1 Service Battalion in Edmonton, Alberta in 1998, he was posted to The Canadian Force School of Electrical Mechanical Engineered as instructor of Hydraulics and Powertrain. David did a tour in Somalia, Africa with the Canadian Airborne Regiment from 1992 to 1993, two tours in Bosnia Herzegovina, one with 2 Service Battalion in 1996 and a second with 2 PPCLI in 1997. David retired from the Canadian Forces in January 2001. He was awarded the Somalia Medal, Peacekeeper Medal, NATO Former Yugoslavia Medal twice and Canadian Decoration. David is a member of Penetanguishene Legion Branch 68. SAINSBURY, William Henry “Bill” Bill was born on November 3, 1916 in Weston, Ontario and enlisted in the Army on May 18, 1936. Bill had three brothers and three sisters, the boys served during World War II, two in the Army, one in the Navy and one in the Air Force all returning home at the completion of the war. Bill served in Canada, the United Kingdom, Newfoundland and Continental Europe. Most of his service was in the Royal Canadian Artillery until retirement on February 6, 1963. Bill and family retired in a small town of Wellington as he was posted to Picton, Ontario with the Royal Canadian Artillery involved in training. Bill was the R.S.M. at the Picton Heights Base before taking his commission and eventually retiring in February 1963. Bill moved to work in security positions within Canadian Embassies in Pakistan, Moscow, Oslo and Prague before returning home in poor health. Bill was a dedicated well respected leader, solider and father. He passed away on June 19, 1986.
